Yes it is. As with all fruit juices, it can be high in sugar, so should be watered down (with water ) and only given as an occasional treat.

Agave nectar is produced from the agave plant, a succulent common in Mexico. It's used in Mexican cooking - it's sweeter than honey and not quite as thick. I found it in the baking section of the grocery store with the sweeteners. I bought it for a recipe I was making.

You know, I was thinking of Guava Juice. Berg is correct, agave is generally used as a natural sweetener. I can't really think of a reason to use it with gilders, although it isn't harmful either.

Thanks for the help, I was just wondering if it could be used. Would it be better to use in place of the honey in the hpw diet? Would it have the same nutrional value?

They are not equivalent - honey contains fructose and glucose, agave nectar is VERY high in fructose. Fructose does not convert to energy as well as glucose. Why do you want to use agave nectar? Why replace the honey if the diet seems to be working fine the way it is? If you don't like using honey, there are other diets with no honey in them at all.

Honey has many additional nutrients and vitamins which are necessary as part of the diets that use honey. Agave nectar is a sweetener made by cooking down and concentrating the juice of the Agave plant, very similar to sugar produced from sugar cane. It should not be substituted for honey in any glider diet. The honey is in these diets for its nutrients, not just its sweet taste.

Thanks for the info. I was just wondering, I do like the hpw diet and my gliders seem to really like it, I was just thinking there was alot of honey in it and did not know if the nectar would be a better choice, but you all answered it for me thanks!! I will leave it the way it is.

I will leave it the way it is. I was at the health food store today looking at the agave nectar. The organic agave nectar comes in jars like honey but the agave nectar has less sugar in it than honey, so I see why you are asking if this could be used instead of Honey. I will be looking into this a little more, it looks like this could be used. I will let you know what I find out.

Just to repeat myself. Honey is in glider diets for the nutrients & vitamins it contains not just for the sugar content or sweet flavor. Agave Nectar lacks the nutrients contained in honey and should not be substituted for honey in glider diets. you might use it for a licky treat but not as a major part of the diet.

I am trying to research the nutrition of the Agave Nectar. my thought and this is just a thought, is that if the Agave Nectar nutrition is close to the Honey this could work because everyone using HPW diet puts bee pollen into the recipe, thus giving the Agave Nectar the same nutrients & vitamins you are speaking of. If looked into and researched this could be a good substitute for the honey as it would be lower in sugar. As I said this needs to be researched first, not telling anyone to jump in and start using this. Thanks ottemom for the repeat, I know you are looking out for the gliders.

The bee pollen nutrients in HPW are in addition to those added by the honey. Using Agave would still not match the nutrient content of honey. Wild gliders eat a large amount of natural saps and acacia gum to meet their energy needs. Reducing sugars in a glider's diet might not provide a diet that meets their energy and digestive needs.

As I said earlier, though, the type of sugar in the agave nectar is different from the type of sugars in honey. It isn't just the total amount of sugars you should be considering, but the type/kind of sugars and how easy it is for the body to utilize them and the effect that those types of sugars have on the body.
