How does the lion color work? Does the color develop as a joey matures? Or are the born with Lion coloring?

Can anyone show me some pictures of lions?

thanks

My lion boy, Kibble, showed color early on as a joey and it's only gotten more pronounced as he's aged.

Jenny, he is absolutely gorgous! His coloring is just stunning! Is he related to Lauren's gliders?

Before anyone goes thinking their glider is lion colored, lion colored gliders come from lion colored gliders. If you don't have the lineage that shows they are from lion parents, odds are you have a stained glider. Lions are NOT common, especially ones as gorgous as Jenny's. Lauren has a pair that produces gorgous lions too. I'm very lucky to have a pair of lion sisters from them (one who now has a joey ip, dad is a mosaic).

Oh I didn't know that it had so much to do with the lineage of the glider. srry about that blush. I'm pretty new to the glider world, going to pick my kids up in one week. When I get pictures that will actually upload I will post them.

I have no idea who the parents are, as my kids are both 2 years old. I just saw the pictures and a striking resemblance. (btw, your gliders are BEAUTIFUL!!)

Thanks for the info though. I learn something new on here everyday! grin

If a glider has lion in their lineage can they produce lions?

Like...say a glider's grandfather is a lion, and it's a white face blonde can it produce lions? Or is it one of those deals where one parent has to have the color for it to be passed on?

And I'm still wondering, does the color develop as the glider matures? Can they start out looking gray and then color up as they get older? Or are they born with those colors?

I know StitchsMom said the colors gotten stronger as her glider matured. But do they usually show color off the bat?

I don't know if there is "het" for Lion or not. I got the two lion girls from Lauren because I know how sweet her babies are, not because of their coloring. The coloring was a bonus.

But Lauren could probably answer that question for you. I know that all of her lion babies shows the coloring right away.

suggie_mamma13, I wasn't meaning to sound like I was jumping on you. It is a common thing for people to mistake stained gliders for either lions or cinnimon gliders. And who knows, your new gliders COULD be lions.

Lion breeding.. well sometimes its a game of chance. I'm sad to say I don't see true lions staying around for much longer. The father to my lion male and the grandfather to Jenny's lion is now neutered. And my male will be neutered very soon. The lion lines are funny. The best pair ups are a true lion with another true lion (but this is very hard because of lines being too close) or in my case a lion colored female and a true lion.
Are there lion hets? Well not like leu cremino albino.. etc.
You need the genes behind it but you also need a bit of the coloring to display itself.

This is all just my opinion not fact.

Thank you! Kibble is a pretty stunning glider and pictures just don't do him justice. With a better camera (and photographer), you would all be stunned at the reds and golds that dominate his color. He is truly beautiful. I could see the color in him as a joey and just HAD TO HAVE HIM. I got him from Lynsie and he is from sterile lines. He is now neutered as well.

Thank you for the responses, I have just a few more questions. grin

Can you have a lion from non lion parent's if there was lion in the lineage?

Are joeys born with lion coloring? Or do they develop as they mature? Are they born with light lion coloring that darkens up over time? Or are they born as is?

Sorry if they sound redundant, but I really haven't gotten an answer to these questions yet, and I'm curious. Thanks everyone!! smile

Glide_Bye_Lily,
If you take a look on thepetglider site at Kibble's lineage and then at the lions, Fry and Leelah, you can see that there are some different colors in their lines. I don't know much about how soon they get their color or if they are born with it and it gets more intense. That would be a great thing to know about though! Looking forward to more info on lions!

I do not think you will get lion gliders out of non lion linage. It is hit or miss with a lion pair. I think the farther away from the main line the lighter the lions tend to be. I agree that sadly soon the lions will not be a color anymore. There has been no proof that there is het for lion there for it is hard to come up with diff lines to keep the color alive. I think that pairing a true lion with a het or colored glider such as a leu helps the lion color. I have paired one of my lion babies with a leu and hope to see a good outcome with there joeys but it is hit or miss as well weather it will work. If you notice leu hets and cremino hets tend to have a creamy color as well as the wfb. Im wondering if we take true lions and pair them with them if we can come up with new lines to keep the color alive?

I have twin lion girls in with a mosaic male. One sister has a single joey, not detatched but I got to get a peek at HER (YIPEE A GIRL!). The other sister has twins ip but I think she stole my super glue and used it on her pouch. She won't let me have even a look at a toe on those babies (yet).

Let me pull up some joey pics of Kibble (Lynsie, these are the ones you took of him). I will also attach a picture of a lion joey next to their standard twin.

Hi,

I am in Scotland and I bought my first pair of gliders a couple of month ago. they now have a joey in the pouch. mine are a yellower colour than others i have seen when i was in London.
i thought it might be to do with their food? i cant see how they are stained as thier pouches are washed every week and are always clean. I would love to have your thoughts. this is Mungo my male, the female is larger and a little different shape but still this colour, i am not sure where they came from
