hey guys Asa seems to be doing ok. although she didn't like taking her meds so Jeff would mix 'em up with a small amount of babyfood so she would eat it..
i also made the appt with the "specialist" Dr Gold, for this tuesday coming up. i would like to get his opinion && see if we can't agree on some things. i'm still adamant abt not having surgery unless it is abso needed.
Cora, i don't get on much on the weekends bc Jeff is home all weekend so i try to spend it with him [he gets "jealous" if i don't the big baby  ] this past weekend he was on call for his job && i got to go with him.
i will call you and Val B, soon when i can as right now the screen on my phone is broken.. we're waiting for our Droids to come in [hopefully by the end of this week !!!]
for now, will update more after the specialist visit.

ok Ladies, it's time for an UPDATE !
i believe i forgot to post Asa's antibiotic previously. it was called Enrofloxacin. has anybody used this? [we do have some left over]
like i said in my last post, i made an appointment with the Bone Specialist, Dr Gold, at Chadwell Animal Hospital for tuesday the 22nd. however when we got there, i did NOT see Dr Gold, i saw their Glider vet [aggravation #1]. she asked what diet i fed. i replied HPW, she immediately dismissed this as "bad" [aggravation #2]. she told us she had typed up a paper that had a diet on it that she used, that it was a recommendation but her oldest glider is 11 and is on it. i got out the Xray Dr Inman had lent us and put it up on the thingie[?? idk what it's called]. she looked at it and said Asa had a calcium deficiency and that it was a fracture. she called it a specific type of fracture but i can not remember what that was. pretty much she said it was an older injury when it is not. she pretty much directed her attention at Jeff when she talked -like he was my father, which many people make the assumption of- [aggravation #3]. Jeff was asking her abt the different type of fractures and she wouldn't differenciate; it was like she refused to answer some questions[aggravation #4]. when she told us it was a calcium defiency, i said "oh kind of like HLP" "well it can be the same but at the same time not, it's Metabolic Bone Disease" she says. i'm thinking "uh.. duh it IS the same thing you twit !!" [aggravation #5]. she tells us she wants Asa on a liquid calcium supplement [i thought she would give Asa a shot to get her started- NOPE] as well as a powdered type. i mention that she is in with 2 boys so would they have this too, she says in all likelihood, yes and to put them on the powdered calcium too. she looks at me like i'm demented for having 2 boys in with her, makes a comment abt neutering or something to that effect [aggravation #6]. she also says she wants to monitor Asa with Xrays once a month to make sure she is getting the calcium. we're done and go out to pay and leave, she gives us the paper on the diet she uses.. pretty much it's from PPP. I AM NOT USING THIS AT ALL !! yup, [aggravation #7]. also on this paper it says a bunch of fruits/veggies/treats you can use. ex: peanuts, sunflower seeds, tofu and some things i know not to feed.
i returned the Xray films to my vet yesterday and told him i would rather go to him abt the xrays and the calcium deficiency and he said that is fine.
since i'm sure i've forgotten something or another, i will ask Jeff and get back to you all with it.
Cora, Val B, i will call you both as soon as i get my new phone, ok ? [or, you are more than welcome to call me on Jeff's phone, which is the same as mine but the last 4 digits are 9315 thank you so much the pair of you, . as well as to every1 else who offered me comfort, consolation and just abt everything else, LOL.

Holly! I just don't see where that lady knows what she is talking about! If your Dr. took and x-ray and saw a fracture, then its BROKE/Fractured. This lady said the same thing...fractured. Even if she does have a calicum def. how does that Fix Asa? Also if you are feedin the HPW and all the other appropriate items (I know you are) then there should be no issue. Maybe there is the possibility that she has a genetic thing (I don't remember where you got Asa) I know that E was from me and the leu came from Becki. I am just kinda in shock that this "glider vet" was so horrible and gave you diet instruction from (PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets. I would have been a stinker and asked her where she obtained her information and what breeder she got her 11 year old inbred glider from I can be evil like that at times! I am sorry you are haveing troubles. I would call that specialist clinic and ask to speak to the hospital manager (I used to work at a vet) and tell them that where 11 years ago, she may have been on the right track with diet, but that is NOT a good diet and she needs to update her research and that you will not be returning for the lack of information you received from thier vet.

Well if she was making that statement about (PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets then that is most likely a true comment! You should ask her to see the linage of her gliders Muuaaahhhhh I have an evil streak in me today, the heat and humidity must be getting to me!

Well, the vet was sorta right when she said HLP is not metabolic bone disease - HLP decscribes the symptom, metabolic bone disease is the cause - but HELLO same outcome!!! It sounds like she was more concerned in discussing semantics than treating your glider! Ugh!!! If she recommends pellets and apple slices I'm sure she sees a lot of calcium-defficient gliders. She ought to know how to do a simple shot. She ought to have some sort of "bedside manner" about her. She is, after all, selling you her services. Shouldn't you feel served when you leave the office???? I wonder if there is an office manager you could speak to and let him/her know that you will not be returning to the clinic, based on level of care your pet received, level of inacurracies and lack of knowledge on part of the vet, and general lack of professionalism when she addressed all her questions and comments to Jeff.

also i forgot to mention that when i said i fed HPW she not only wrote it wrong, but assumed it was "like the Leadbeaters diet" [BML] i finally got the "Diet Recommended" paper out of the truck. i'm not going to type out the entire thing but i am typing up the "adult animals" part. i think i --mistakenly-- gave every1 the impression that the vet said (PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets out right, however it is not directly from PPP but you will see what i mean when i said "pretty much it's from PPP".
<quote>Adult animals thrive on variety. these animals should be fed a base of glider pellets with a protein content between 20-35% on the nutrition label. the base diet recommended for adult gliders is Exotic Nutrition Glider Complete pellets <gives the EN website>. this diet contains the appropriate amount of protein and eucalyptus, which is part of their natural deit. the adult animals should also be offered a variety of fruits and vegetables, a protein source and a calcium supplement. a calcium supplement for sugar gliders is crucial for proper bone development and maintenance. an appropriate calcium supplement for sugar gliders contains either calcium carbonate or calcium gluconate. suggestions include: crushed Tums tablets and Rep-cal or any other calcium supplement sold for reptiles that does not contain Vitamin D3. To feed your animal: * give 1tbsp glider pellets per day (provide fresh pellets each day) * give 1tbsp fruits or vegetables[lightly sprinkle with a calcium powder supplement] * give 1tbsp 100% fruit juice[no sugar or preservatives added, any flavor is ok] or nectar ** give an additional protein source(choose 1 of the following) **1)2-3 insects per glider per day (live/canned/or freeze dried mealworms, wax worms, crickets or grasshoppers) **2)1-2 1/4" pieces of boiled or baked chicken (without seasoning) **3)1/8 - 1/4 hard boiled egg or scrambled egg (can grind up shells and give too as long as the shells are cooked)
here are a few treats listed: life cereal, cottage cheese, pecans, walnuts, sugar cane sticks, sunflower seeds, apple sauce with oats, peanuts, sugar beet these are some good treats listed like: yogurt drops, cheerios, monkey biscuits in apple juice, baby foods, rose hips[?] and cranraisins/raisins --idk abt you all, but none of my butts will eat raisins--
here are a few protein sources listed: earthworms, tofu, Junior Hotdog finger food, beef baby food these are the good stuffs listed like: mealies, egg, chicken, wax worms, chicken baby food
"safe and appropriate fruits and vegetables" listed: apple, papaya, blackberries, honeydew melon, oranges, grapes, cherries, watermelon, pear, strawberries, cantaloupe, kiwi, mango, blueberries, banana --again, my butts don't eat it; but then i haven't fed it in quite some time-- carrots, cooked sweet potato, cooked butternut squash, peas, broccoli, yellow squash, green beans, cauliflower, zucchini, corn** (** "please ensure that it is coated with calcium powder and limit quantity of corn fed")</quote>

Holly, please do call me as soon as you can. Holly! I just don't see where that lady knows what she is talking about! If your Dr. took and x-ray and saw a fracture, then its BROKE/Fractured. This lady said the same thing...fractured. Even if she does have a calicum def. how does that Fix Asa? Megan A fractured leg does not necessarily need medical intervention beyond what Asa is getting now. Cage rest and a liquid calcium supplement will allow the leg to calcify. This is all that is needed. A more invasive or stressful treatment will only complicate the problem. The leg is fractured, it is not splintered or disconnected. This is known because Holly did the right thing and got x-rays. It will heal fine as long as the glider is kept from climbing, given the calcium supplement and loved on lots by her mommy.
