Hello Again.

Sorry but I have another important question. One of the joeys is not eating from mother that I can tell. She has the other in pouch again and left this one in their sleeping pouch. I'm trying to supplement with Brisky's Booster Milk but he's not taking it. I really don't know what to do. Please help me.

I haven't experience with rejected joeys, but don't give up! Someone with experience will be along shortly.

I presume you've got all the supplies (e.g., a French cathetar) and have looked at the various sites (e.g., Hand-feeding your joey)?

Has the mother completely rejected it, or will she take it back to help keep it warm? Are their nips or scratches on its face, for instance?

Don't give up! Keep the joey warm and the belly filled, if you can.

Do you have any puppy milk replacer (esbilac) or ensure? If so, try those. I used the puppy milk replacer once I was able to get some but used the ensure until then.

Also, the joey needs to be warm or it won't eat.

It is normal for the babies to go in and out of the mother's pouch for a few days... especially if they are small in size. Not uncommon for one baby to be out. However, one parent (usually the male) should remain in the sleeping pouch to keep the wee one warm.

One can tell if there is milk in the tummy by holding the baby up to a bright light as there will be a white patch seen through the thin skin... sort of in the middle and slightly to the left. If tummy is all pink and no white patch seen... then there is no milk in the stomach. Only then should a baby be supplemented.

I have been up all night to keep a watch on them in case she is rejecting the one. He has been crying lots and she won't feed him. The male has been with him but I just found the joey climbing out of the bag crying and cold. The cry is a pitiful hiss not a nice squeak. I think I should pull it what do you think? I have talked to Suz once last night, but everything was o.k. then. Do you know when she gets up in the morning?

I forgot to add something in the above reply. I do have a puppy replacement milk that is also for raccoons and ferrets I believe. I'll try that I guess. I don't have a french cathetar just a syringe thingy. Will that work,i will just put a drop on his lips? I'm really scared and don't know what I'm doing but i read suz page. Any more help out there?

[:"green"]Ange,
I'm awake & I'll try to call you in just a few minutes. In the meantime, do you have any pedialyte or gatorade? If so, try mixing the booster milk with that - it will have better flavor & the electrolytes will help with dehydration. Also, Vanilla Ensure works very well for feeding the joeys. The puppy milk is fine if the little guy will eat it. I only use syringes without the catheter, so that's fine, too.
Hang in there & I'll call you in a few minutes...
