Since I recently rescued a little girl who is going to need to have part of her foot amputated and possibly part of her leg if the vet deems it necessary, I thought I'd start a thread on caring for gliders with only three legs. Obviously there are some changes that will need to be made to the cages for amputee gliders, such as more pouches/ledges for them to sit on and to catch them if they fall, but I'm sure that there is more that we can do for these little guys/gals.
Some things I've noticed with my Carina Trey is that she seems to have trouble with walking on the bars at the bottom of her cage. I'm not sure if this is due to her having 3 usable legs or if it's due to her age/size. So to solve this problem, I've placed a piece of fleece on the cage bottom for her to walk on. It has made things much easier for her.
I've also noticed that it's harder for her to use hanging dishes. Again, this might be due to age/size rather than ability, but I've helped her by placing her food in shallow bowls or on plates so it is easier for her to reach.
I'm not sure if she'll need a special wheel or if she'll be able to use the regualr stealth wheels, but I'm looking into the possiblity.
If anyone else has anything to add to this please do so. I'm working on a problem by problem basis here but would like to anticipate her needs rather than try to cobble something together at the last moment for her.

Well, my little Baby B, unfortunately, somehow ended up with a broken tail. I have absolutely no idea how this happened, which is frustrating. I don't know if this fits into this thread since she needed no special modifications. We took her to the vet, and he found the "next good joint" in her tail. He sedated her and then removed the least amount of her tail that he could. He used laser surgery, and she is completely healed up. Right after she came out of her anesthetic, she was grumpy, checked her tail, and fussed with it a little bit, then calmed right down and went to sleep. I have to say that I was very impressed with the laser surgery. He even let me sit in with her... she is completely healed up and back to being her feisty adorable little self.

I have Nubby, she has had both of her back legs amputated We got her from a mill breeder in Vegas and the day we brought her home she was SOOOO skinny and had almost all her hair missing. I have never cried so hard for a glider that I only knew a few hours. I stayed up all night with her making sure she ate.... she also has some condition that makes her bob her head constantly. When we first got her we put her in a small cage with a wire bottom, but we put blankets all around the bottom for her which she used to curl up in (the breeder didn't use pouches she just threw in old pieces of shirts for them ) Anyway that whole first night I thought for sure I would have to take her to the vet to have her put down, but cause she just looked misserable, even her eyes looked dull and in pain She could barely hold her head still long enough to eat and when she mannaged to get food it usually ended up all over her face.

I was at work one day and saw a cage that had a picture of a glider on it. I looked at it, opened it up and decided it would be perfect for Nubby. It had 2 shelves and ramps and no wire bottom. We use aspen shaving on the bottom of her cage.

We watch her all the time to make sure she is able to "get around" in her cage. It is amazing to watch her. She hardly EVER uses the ramps. She likes to climb the bars and sit on the shelfs. We even have a wheel in there for her cage mate and every now and then we find her playing in the wheel... she runs but not as well (of course with no back legs it would be hard to). She has amazing uper arm strength she can hang for ever at the top and she seems just fine with it.

She is now a good weight (very small girl but good weight for her) and her hair has grown back. I forgot to mention that she is missing part of her tail as well. Her head still bobs but it is more of a controlled bob (not violent like it was before).

Anyway I just thought I would let you know that they will more then likely adapt to what they have. Watching Nubby carry her self on the bars is just amazing. She doesn't glider but she has such a big heart and SOOO much energy. Attached is a picture of her a few months after we got her. Her hair is starting to grow back in different colors (now she is all one color but I don't have a current picture of her... I need one and I wish I would of taken a picture of her when we very first got her....I wasn't thinking at the time)

I have two gliders, both housed together. Got the first one Sara when she was about 4 years old and had lost her back left leg in a pouch injury, had it amputated. She had it amputated about a year before I got her, and by that time she was very used to living without it. She is up and down and all around the cage, no problems. She doesn't like some things like bridges, thin things to climb on (like links) and does get tired when she has to hang on the side of the cage to drink or eat out of a hanging bowel. SO her water bottle is placed where she can sit on the bottom of the cage and still drink the water and food bowels are on a flat surface, bottom or on a shelf. She also does much better with bar spacing of 1/2 by 1/2 inch, tried the 1/2 by 1, too hard, tried the rep, too hard. She runs in a regular wheel fine.

Now, got another rescue that looked to be under a year old (Pete), he had recently had the same back left leg amputated, but of course, they couldn't tell us what happened. He was not as active as Sara and tended to drag his bottom behind him, drug it through his food, and was not as confident in getting around. But... with time he learned his way around, gained strength, and does just about everything that Sara does, and almost as much as any four legged glider.

I know that both of you have mentioned that your gliders lost back legs.....do you think there would be any difference if a glider lost a front leg as opposed to a back leg? So far Carina Trey is getting along great & I know she'll adapt well to things (Alicia thanks for mentioning bar spacing) I just want to make things as easy for her as possible.

I have taken in a rescue who was misisng a front leg. She was a mean little thing Do you blame her though?! It was funny to watch her try to swat at me with her missing front arm. But she got around the cage just fine also. She didn't like the wheel.

I talk to her new owner at least every month and she says that she is doing great. Still crabby but she gets around great. her arm was amputated close to her chest, so they didn't leave anything. Poor thing I never knew what did happen to her... she came to me like that. Oh she also came pregnant with twins and was a great momma. her man was neutered by their new owner so she wouldn't have to deal with babies any more.

I think your QT will more then likely just adapt. You will be amazed as she gets older and you see how she won't let a missing arm slow her down.

Leda is missing a hind leg. She was a rescue and I was told that she lost her leg getting tangled up in loose strings.

She gets around well, but she's very small. She sometimes wants to climb on things in the cage, and try to grab something at the same time. That doesn't work very well, but other than that she's doing good.

i've got a boy with his front left missing. he's quite agile, he's been missing it since he was a young joey because his daddy chewed it off so i guess he's pretty used to it, but he flails it around when he climbs like he's used to it being functional. when i hold him he tucks it up against his belly as tightly as he can.

i have extra stuff for him to climb on but he doesn't really use it either. he's got a wodent wheel but he doesn't use it at all as far as i've seen. i keep it in there just in case though. he's not really bonded to me, it's been a slow process to bond to him because he was not very tame when i got him, and he's quite hard to catch if he's not already bundled in a pouch.

I know Gil has a glider that is missing a front arm. If I remember right it's my Serenity's momma. I know it's one of his parents. That glider was a beauty and huge.

Out of curiosity, where are their back legs amputated? Is it the whole leg or just the foot? I have a client who's glider is going through this now but we are not sure how much is going to have to come off yet. Thanks!

I am new to glidercentral but noticed this forum. Back in August(the week before we were evacuating for Rita) I had to have my male glider Ike's front right arm amputated. Kat in the cage next to him got out and they started fighting. It looked okay so I treated it with medicine at home, then he started to self mutilate. I then took him to the vet and they thought they could stitch it but once they got in there the infection and spread through the foot. They thought they wouldn't need to amputae it as much as they did but it was cut about a little bit above where our elbow would be. So really it just depends on the situation. In my opinion the more amputated the better because that would be better on them because of less dead weight that they can't support. Ike gets around great know and has had a happy bunch of 2 boys with another glider.
he adjusted pretty fast, the only tricky part was trying to keep the bandage on.

Lola's front arm is amputated. When i got her the damage had already been and her paw was already petrified so i took her to the vet to have it looked at. HS ewas getting it stuck in the bars of the cgae cause she was trying to use it but couldnot.
After her surgery she was perfect! She run around and played just like she had been that way for along time. She is the sweetest little girl! Several months later she became pregnant. SHe was the best glider mom I have had so far! I was at first concerned about her and the joey but she did so well! I was so proud of her!
But she gets around the cage just fine.

in answer to how far the foot woul need to be amputated.I think that would depend on the severity of the damage. If you could get by withonly taking off the foot that would be great but if you can't then go ahead and take off the entire leg to the next good joint.

I agree with bedeese. It all depends on the serverity of the wound. My girl with no back legs has both of the gone right above the knee joint. The other girl I had with a missing front leg had it down just right at the ankle, so her leg was still pretty long.

I just wanted to update everyone that Miss Carina ended up NOT having to get her foot amputated after all. The bones that were sticking out fell off so she gets to keep what's left of her foot. She's getting around great in her cage & while we still want to take an x-ray of her arm/shoulder it doesn't seem to be bothering her and doesn't seem as deformed. She may have just been holding it at an odd angle.

We have several gliders missing legs. Mariah is miisning her right back leg, Vincent is missing his front left leg. Both gliders came to us as rescues. I have many gliders missing toes and tails that have come in. I won't list them but the ones missing legs I will, it would just be too long to type.
Mariah gets around great and loves climbing, she is a top of the cage girl although I put pouches and toys at both the top and bottom of the cage. She does seem to tire out with lots of climbing but she does well, she was very very thin and in not good condition when she came in. She is doing so much better.
Vincent has a little more problems getting around. He is a bottom of the cage glider and although he does climb some not as much a Mariah. He was also in poor condition and is doing much better now once he was started on a good diet.

About 1 1/2 years ago, my first glider got his front leg caught in unlikely threads.
We were very lucky--I had gone out of town that morning, but came back that night since I never leave gliders alone all night.
He was fine when he woke up, and played till 4:30 a.m. At 8:30 a.m. when I woke up, he was tangled, but didn't make a sound!
First rush to the vet and they tried to stich up the arm.
I am so grateful I had him on antibiotics! (he still hates the fridge). The arm dried, and had to be amputated above the elbow. I wept horribly outside the vets.
The happy ending to the story:
He is 100% fine, gets around like before, and has got his wife pregnant again!
I thought he wouldn't want to/be able to reproduce, and was just as happy that way.
I chose not to neuter him because he had a bad reaction to the anesthesia, and also started chewing on his foot after the attempted repair.
One night I looked in the cage to find...well...full recovery!
He was hanging off the ceiling, mating.
I haven't really mad any structural changes in his cage set up. I do offer food on the ground, as well as in hanging dishes, but he does fine with hanging dishes.
He still drinks hanging upside down.

I also have 3 rescues with 1/2 to none of their tails.
For anyone with gliders missing tails, I highly recommend a running toy called the Critter Revolution. It's enclosed with a feeding station and tubes to hide in. It greatly helped my tailless gliders regain balance!
yeye.

Butterbiscuit came to me with her front right claws missing, just little nubs left, and 3 missing in her back right foot. She gets around pretty well, but tucks it against her body when not moving. I love her so much, and can't wait to get her a buddy!

My Rocky has three legs, one is completely missing and the foot on the other side is deformed, but he has some use of it. This is how I got him. His lower half is slightly twisted and he drags it. Oh and his tail is partially gone. I got a wodent wheel for him and one for my normal glider because the healthy one would get Rocky stuck in the wheel doing 100 MPH (LOL)Poor little Rocky would come out with his head spinning. Now he runs his own wheel and has great stamina. But if you listen you can tell which boy is running the wheel by the drag sound. I feed him out of the little paper plates and place the food around the edges, never in the middle (to keep him from dragging his body through the food.) dance

The only problem I have is when he is in the wheel he drags the lower half through the feces and urine while he is running. I haven't figured out how to control that problem.

I thought I would add to this thread.

At the KSGT, we brought home Toffee. He has his front leg amputated at the shoulder. He is a dream baby. He is in a rept and gets around that thing like any glider would. He is about 2 years old and it was very traumatic how he lost his leg.

It seems he was placed to close to another cage and the two boys fought. One bit his hand. It had ointment put on it and wrapped with gauze. A month later when his hand was black, he was finally taken to the vet who amputated at the wrist. He was taken home where he then self mutilated. Again ointment and gauze was used and another month went by. He was again taken to the vet and the "owner" said she was tired of the hassel and to just put him down. The wonderful vet told her if she would sign him over, the surgery would be done and he would be given to a rescue home for placement. THANKFULLY, she signed him over.

He had surgery on a Saturday morning, metacam saturday afternoon and again on Sunday. That's it! No ecollar, no further pain meds etc. Of course he was in the loving hands of our own Anita (SweetGliders) and I guess he knew he was safe and loved finally.

Anita asked if I could take him until he fully healed and work on finding him a home (because I don't work outside the home and have all the time in the world). My daughter HeatherK took one look at his sweet face and said MINE! Within a week of being home, she was getting kisses from him! Heather (and her family) lives with me so I get to love on him too. Toffee is her first glider.

The other little tri-pod we have is Camelot. Cam came oop with his back leg missing. It appears to have been chewed off by one of his parents. Since he never has had that back leg, he doesn't seem to notice it is missing. He is about 6 months old now and was living with Zoey, an absolutely SWEET girl. We had to seperate them temporary. He gets neutered this week and we are going to see if we can get the three gliders to live together.

Judge not until you have walked in their shoes and lived their lives. What you see online is only part of the story.

I could have missed the pain
But I'd of had to miss the dance

What great stories about these gliders!! As many know, Peanut just underwent an amputation surgery about a week and a half ago, and I know I have to change alot for when I get her back home. I already have an idea of what I'm going to do to prevent her from falling to the bottom of the cage. In a cage that's almost as tall as I am, I DON'T want to risk her falling at all. I have a stealth, but I don't know if I should get another different kind since she doesn't have a right hind leg. Are there any things made especially for gliders that have amputated limbs? Any help would be great! smile

Bailey, the Stealth is the best one you could have, particularly since there is no outer wall or crossbar to get hung up on. I wouldn't change.

you can hang hammocks across the cage at many different levels to help cushion her should she fall wink
