Hey all, I need some advice. I just got my first male last week and yesterday I checked on him and his penis was out. I know that boys going through puberty can have it out sometimes a lot, but how do I know when it's too much or when to worry? I don't know how long he had it out before I checked on him and he had it out for probably 40 minutes when I went to the store and got KY jelly. I put that on there and it went back in within about a minute or less. Then I checked on him before I went to work last night and it was still in. This morning I just got home and he had it out again, so I put some KY on it and it went back in within 30 seconds to a minute. I went to sleep for a few hours after work and just woke up to check on him. He was in his pouch and had been sleeping and it was out again. It looks to be about a cm out. He's not playing with it...it's just out. I put KY on it a few minutes ago and I am still waiting for it to go back in. It looks nice and pink. He is eating very well, the PP diet. I haven't heard any hissing when going potty. Stool looks fine. He has had one negative fecal. Is this ok? When is a vet visit in order? What does the "normal puberty" penis stuff look like versus the "i need to worry about this" penis stuff? Thanks.

You may want to take him in next week to rule out any other issues. Keep applying the KY so it doesn't dry out. He could be relaxing enough when he sleeps that it hangs out a bit.

The time to worry about how long it's been out varies from boy to boy. It's entirely possible that it IS puberty and he's just learning about "that set" of muscles and how to use them.
I get worried when one of my ADULT (talking over a year old) males has it out & it won't retract back in for 3 or 4 HOURS. The color is a deep rose/almost red and appears swollen....THEN it's time to hit the panic button! Another clue to obvious trouble is if the urine smell becomes stronger than "usual" or the color is darker (yes, you CAN check this too: put him on a scale & look at the color...dark yellow (sunflower petals)=trouble, pale yellow to almost clear=ok) I panic LOOOOOONG before it turns dark red or (heaven forbid) blackens at the ends.

Thanks for the help.
Anyone else have any thought on this? I checked him a few minutes ago and both forks are out about 1cm. I put some more KY on it.

Orbit was doing the same thing at that age. I bet it is a "growing to be a man" phase. Just watch him like you have been. Could you call you vet and ask his opinion Monday?

Every time Roo went to sleep, he relaxed so completely, nearly all of his penis came out. Unfortunately, when he turned 9 months old, it got stuck in his fur. I checked him that morning. Three hours later, he came out of his pouch and acted strange. When I checked, I saw the tip on one side was stuck. I used KY jelly but he ended up having about 1/2" removed. Six weeks later, the same thing happened. I asked for a biopsy that time and it showed he had a hemangioma tumor. Thankfully, he has had no problems since the second surgery. He is missing about half of the fork on each side.
A hemangioma (comes from the Latin words hemangio meaning blood vessel and oma meaning tumor with active cell dividing activity) is a benign self-involuting tumor of endothelial cells. This tumor is most often found on the head or neck, however, they may occur anywhere on the skin or internal organs.

I called 2 vets today and they both seem to think that it may be hormonal. The one I just talked to said that she would worry about a peice of fur wrapping around it and constricting it or preventing it from retracting. His penis is in now...well it just looks like a little red dot on his cloaca. She said to watch for swelling or color changes or his licking at it a lot. She suggested, and I don't think I am comfortable with this...to pull it out more to see if there is anything wrapped around the base. Then to see if he can pull it in on his own. I have never heard of anyone doing this and I would be afraid that it would cause more damage.

If it's in now, then he can pull it in. Maybe he's just being a typical teenage boy?

Thanks guys for the reassurance...just not used to little teenage boys. I will NOT pull on it and I WILL keep an eye on it. Maybe he is smelling the girls in the other room.

Jamie I remember when Loki was going through that phase. I forget which breeder told me this but its his way of saying look what I have! Even if he can only smell the girls. Hes trying to show off. The time to worry is if it changes color at all. I hope you figure out whats wronge with him ((hugs)) Oh an congrats on your new baby!

I just checked on him and he was sleeping...of course with it out again. It seems like the general consensus that I don't need to worry about it just yet. I hope he's just figuring out his boy parts and that nothing is wrong. I will keep ya posted.
How long does this phase usually last?
Out of curiosity, how long is the whole penis of a glider? I have seen about a cm out so far...but I have been told that it's much longer than that.

I went through this when Badge was 8 mos old until he was app. 11 mos. old. Now, years later when he had to have anal gland surgery, his penis came out and stayed out for 5 weeks. I was going crazy! I kept the K.Y jelly on every 30 minutes. He would NOT retract and I thought something might have been damaged during surgery. Once he came out of the body vest, the little stinker retracted it!
Great pics Connie and yes, that looks right for the entire size.

Thanks for posting those. Now, is this color shown in the picture ok? Or are the forks too dark in color?

Those photos look like normal healthy tissue.
When there is a direct penis issue, they will turn very dark red or black.
