I would like a few of you to check out my diet plan and let me know what you think of it.

It can be found here:
http://jillmariestuff.webs.com/jillmariesgliderdiet.htm
and here:
http://www.handmadejewelry4jesus.com/sugar_glider_diet_recipe

info on both pages is the same, just a slightly different look and format.

Am looking for opinions on ingredients, ease of following, any additional input is appreciated. I do have a chart that shows some specific nutritional info on the diet such as calcium amount and such, do you think this would be a nice addition to the pages?

Thanks

sounds exciting, I would love to go through the detail of your diet when I have more time on my hands. How long have you been feeding this diet and can you share the pro's and cons you have experienced with it?

I had a quick look at it and one thing I noticed that would be a problem in my house but can be overcome, is the variety fruits/veggies served per day. My kids tend to be picky when I give too much daily variety.

I will have to sit down and give it my full attention to be able to give my opinion. wink

Jill,
Only My Opinion, since you want it.
I found it to be very lengthy, I got lost in all the explanation.
It needs to be a little more simple, in explanation.
Instead of saying Maple Syrup is 40 to 1 , what are measurments in tsp or cc's .
Your diet is just another choice to make in the many , now available. Good luck on your diet venture.

to clarify, the 40 to 1 statement about the maple syrup is explaining that maple syrup is made from sap, and it takes about 40 gallons of sap to make 1 gallon of syrup.

so depending on how much of the "maple water" you want to make, it is a 40 to 1 ratio. I do give the measurement in the recipe area.

hoped this help clarify

I know the explanations are lengthy...but I wanted people to know why I wrote it that way, and felt extra explanations would be better than not explaining enough, and have people asking later anyway. I wrote it the way I want a diet to be written as I am the type who wants to know WHY.

edit add:
been feeding for almost 2 years with minor changes along the way. such as adding more acacia, or grinding up the stew in the blender as opposed to chopped. I also used to use ensure, but removed it about 8-9 months ago and that is when I added in the bone meal and cod liver oil.

my gliders are robust, but not fat, very active, and healthy looking. Arwen has some crackles in her fur, but the other 3 do not. Her fur is longer than the others, so maybe it just appears crackled for that reason. The others have very thick nice fur. No health issues to date.

I do not have any comments on the nutritional value - I probably will not take the time to fully evaluate it for my self.

I will comment on the 'readability' and 'usability' as I see it.

You might consider separating out the long (3 full printed pages) of explanation from the diet plan itself. I was totally confused by the time I reached the end of this section, even just skimming it.

I would not choose to use this diet because it has just too many ingredients. I prefer to keep my glider meals simple and choose to use one fruit and one vegetable each night - but providing variety by using different combinations each night.

The diet also calls for many items I just do not keep on hand normally - some like 2-sprigs of watercress would probably have most of a package go to waste before it was all used.

I do not have refrigerator or freezer space to keep the 20 different fruits and vegetables listed to be used in the 4 day rotation.

WHY Black Olives? are buying the canned (low sodium) variety or do you use the ones that come in a jar (loaded with sodium)

I understand the Chicken Stew as the protein source for days 1 and 3 but the JM Glider Nectar does not appear to have any substantial protein sources in the recipe.

I can understand your reasoning for using part Maple Syrup instead of all honey for the additional calcium. Honey however has natural antibacterial properties that Maple Syrup does not.

I do not understand the use of "Maple Water" when you are already including Maple Syrup in both the chicken stew and in the JM Glider Nectar.

I expect this diet would be extremely confusing for a new owner to follow. Most want a simple easy to serve diet not one you have to get out charts and calendars to prepare each day.

As a newbie, myself, I have to agree on these points. To be honest I didn't finish reading it because there was just so much to follow....very overwhelming. This coming from someone who used to cook and prepare a well balanced and nutritious meal for their dogs instead of feeding the easy dog chow.

If you have the time, money, freezer space and willingness to do this diet, then so be it. But, from what I see mostly on the forum is that MOST people just do not. And for a new person looking for a nutritious diet to feed their babies, I believe this one would be just way too much for most to follow without complete confusion.

I agree- a bit wordy and too much is "explained"- most pet owners- glider slaves included and especially newbies- want diets to be *simple* and *easy*. While lots of us (including ME) *do* like to know the "whys", most just do not want that much info to read.

I suggest 2 things:

(1) Taking part in a diet study to assess the nutritional value of the diet for this particular species so that this info can be referenced on your pages.

(2) Keep the listed ingredients and instructions SIMPLE with links to the explanations included- in this way, people who *want* to know the "whys" can go look at it, but the *majority* of people who do *not* want to know the whys can skip it and will find it easier to read and understand.

great ideas!

thanks to everyone who took the time to comment. All great suggestions.

will seriously give them some thought.

Candy, just wanted to answer some of your questions/statements. honey is still being used, just less of it, they LOVE the olives, and olives have quite a bit of calcium. I personally wanted a lot of variety in the diet. You may be right though and it is too much for some people. To be honest I love making their dinner every night. I made the chart thing for my hubby, as I could remember every day what they had, but he would repeat stuff, so the chart idea was born smile
the maple water started out to entice them to eat the pellets, at first they wouldnt touch the pellets without it. and I figure its a tiny (very tiny) touch more of calcium.
the watercress can go in the freezer...

I do have a breakdown of the diet...perhaps I should add it...

It would be helpful if you added the breakdown of the diet - that should include protein, calcium and phosphorus AMOUNTS in mg not just the Ca:P ratios. Including the sugar, fat and fiber content would be useful as well.

Perhaps on your page, where you list the diet ingredients, you can have links where if you click on the word is says why you added it to the diet. Then the information is still there, but the page is "cleaner" looking and less overwhelming.

It doesn't seem terribly different feeding-wise than the Priscilla Price diet as far as rotating what you feed each night and having a schedule.

I AM NOT a diet guru, but I just wanted to say it looks very well thought out! I would love to her progress as others try it. I'm a big fan of giving them saps too, but I am too new to be experimenting with real gliders, so I will just cheer from the sideline smile

And I am one who LOVED the explanation, but I think that just depends on a person's personality; I would have read it if it was at the bottom of the page after the diet instructions, too smile

Anyway, great work!

I wasn't aware you could feed cinnamon...I had always read that any spices, salt, etc weren't good for gliders.

And I've taken milk thistle personally...good for helping the liver filter out "bad" things...is that the same for gliders? Helping their liver function?

I wasn't lost in the text...I'm an avid reader lol so I read thru all of it pretty quick smile

My gliders love cinnamon on applesauce. I give it to them usually around holidays.

Jill, you have listed there many of the foods I give my gliders at times, but not all at once. My kids are on PML (Pockets Modified Leadbeaters) and get a ton of variety. I feel that too much variety all at once though can make them picky. JMO

I have to agree that your diet needs to be broken down to actual ratios as it is very confusing for a newcomer. Honestly, if I'd read that 7 years ago, I would have felt too overwhelmed to even attempt it. Again, JMO.

cinnamon is safe, and is "believed" in human diets anyway, to help balance sugars.

plus they really like it!

milk thistle is for healthy livers.

Thanks.
