My little Olivia, OOP March 2010, came out to greet me dragging both of her hind legs the other night. I immediately separated her from the rest of the clan and checked them all out. All of my others seem fine thus far. She is eating and drinking fine, seems to get around OK on only her front legs. She is active and comes out to greet me when I approach the cage. Other than her back legs, she seems pretty normal.

My exotic vet is like 100 miles away, but stumbled across a new one locally. Was a bit hesitant to try but so far I am completely thrilled with him! (More on that later). So she had an ultrasound to see if she had a break and to assess the condition of bones and joints. He decided to keep her for the afternoon to run blood work, urine and fecal and to start her on whatever course of treatment is indicated based on test results.

I have to go back at 5:30 for the results and to get treatment plan. I am cautiously optimistic that she doesn't have a complete break given his decision to go further with testing and a treatment plan. He also asked if I would be OK giving injections if he taught me how to do them... I am fine, Dad was a diabetic so I have some experience and needles don't freak me out (as long as it's not IV.... ick!)

So cross your fingers for little Olivia smile

Hi!

So little Olivia had a tough day, but she's a trooper! The Doc took blood for her tests, that went out to the lab but hasn't come back yet. They did urine and fecal as well. Her treatment plan includes an oral calcium supplement which is being made at the special "compounding" pharmacy and will be ready first thing in the AM. Also, an oral antibiotic, it starts with an A, can't think of it at the moment because I am tired, but it is being made for her as well. I pick them both up first thing in the AM.

His initial evaluation of the ultrasound and x-ray doesn't show any evidence of fracture so it doesn't look like a trauma at this point. He was going to study them further this evening smile

After her busy day, Livvy just wanted to sack out in her pouch for a while and be quiet. She did however come out to snack and have a drink.

Val - I will be running around in the AM to pick up her meds and such, but will give you a call tomorrow.

sounds like it might be hind leg paralysis. Can either be diet related or a primary bacterial or parasitic infection. Usually if it's diet related, it will be a slowed onset and if it's an infection, it will be a quicker onset. I am no vet, so I can't say for sure that it's HLP, but would be worth asking the vet about. She's already on an antibiotic and calcium and had a fecal done, so that is good. I hope she gets better soon!

Morning!

Some optimistic news to report! After an appropriate amount of kvetching and snoozing in her pouch after yesterday's adventure, she was playing like crazy last night in her hospital cage! I was so happy to see her having fun! Seems that she's feeling a bit better. smile

I have to run out and get all her meds from the compounding pharmacy. they should be ready shortly.

Hi,

Poor little Livvy.... another crabby morning for her. The Dr called and wanted me to come up to the office to pick up her meds and so he could teach me how to inject them. I was a little confused on the med situation, but he set me straight.

So she has injections of Calcium Gluconate, for 5 days, followed by a 2 month supply of daily oral Calcium Glubonate (sorry if I got those backwards, there is like a 1 letter difference). She also has an oral antibiotic which wasn't yet ready at the compounding pharmacy.. but will be ready by 3pm.

We go back on Tuesday for a check, and a consult of all the test results. He said that he did see something, he's not sure what, near her spine. Didn't look like a break, could be either an anomaly in the ultrasound or a a mineral deposit of some kind, but though suspicious he didn't think it was the root cause of her issues. He emailed her slides to a colleague for his opinion.

So little Olivia didn't get to sleep late for a second day in a row, LOL... poor little crabby pants smile

Cyndi

You know, I wanted to ask the group.

Is it possible that while she seems to have no use of her hind legs, that she would be able to grip something with her back feet? I might have been 3/4 of the way asleep when she was playing in the wee hours this morning, but I could swear that she was gripping the cage bars with her back feet. Also, if I put my finger in her rear foot, it closes around my finger. Is it possible or is it just a reflex?

I would say that since you were able to get her in for treatments as quickly as you did, her chances of having a full recovery is very optimistic. The treatments can start taking effect within 12-18 hours of the initial dose.

If there were still partial to minimal paralysis, she would not be able to reflex nor have a good grip with her back feet.

I'm hoping for a positive outcome, and that your little one gains full recovery soon.

Sending lots of prayers your way. hug2

Yes, she might be able to grip.

If a glider has an injury, it might not use its legs, but its feet work just fine. Often, a glider with a tail, hip or ankle injury will just stop using the leg or both legs all together.

If the glider has HLP, well, it is reversible. While healing, you will see return of function.

Seeing this is a good sign.

please do call.

Hey all, just wanted to update you.

So not much with Livvy's condition seems to be changing at all in my opinion. I can tell you that she is eating very well, active, friendly, perky with her ears up... but still doesn't seem to have any movement in her hind legs. She is however most definitely wrapping her little back toes around the cage bars.

Thanks for your continued wishes smile

Sunday Update

So Little Livvy is plugging along. A bit of potential good new though! Last night, when I took her out to give her injection and play with her, I noticed that though she was "walking" using her front legs, her back legs instead of being dragged behind were being used almost like flippers. (I know, it sounds weird) and when she stopped moving to rest, instead of her back legs being flat out back, she was able to tuck her passenger side leg under her so that she was almost sitting correctly on that side. Her other leg was straight out behind still though.

So a bit of progress it seems... will keep posting.

Morning -

So it seems that we have what could be a turn for the worst. Last night, actually at about 2am this morning, she seemed fine (all things considered) and was playing in her cage. She ate pretty well etc. Somewhere between 2am and 10am she developed a bloated belly which in most cases isn't a good sign.

We are getting ready to go to the vets. I will update later.

Hi All,

Little Olivia is on the road to recovery! We had a vet visit today. I got to see her xray and test results. She has something that looks like it could be a tiny fracture or crack on her spine. The good news is that she is starting to get movement in her back legs!! Instead of dragging them flat out behind, she now is able to pull them up and tuck them under her body when she sits! He also did the pin test on her hind quarters, and unlike last visit she reacted to it much more, which means she is also getting some feeling back! She is eating like a little piggy! Last visit she was 58g. This visit she is 67g! At this point, we are taking oral calcium, antibiotics and pain med just as a precaution. She is still a risk for a fall, so for now she will stay in the small hospital cage.

Things look good at the moment, and she is making progress.
Thanks for all your thoughts and prayers smile
