Basically sugar gliders will be legal in PA 60 days after they voted for this amended legislation. You will not need a permit, it will be just like having a parrot or gerbil.
Also in this legislation permits will no longer be issued after December 2013 unless you had a permit prior to December 2011.
But the bottom line is Sugar Gliders will be legal in PA in a few days.

Nope Called the Game Commission, they said the bill had passed the house but now has to be voted on in the senate before it becomes law. Notice how it says "Referred to GAME AND FISHERIES." This is not the Game Commission, rather the committee in which the senate will be voting on HB 1398. I don't know how to get in contact with the senate to see when they will be voting on it, if anyone does would you mind doing so so we could find out the status of this law?

I actually just contacted the main sponsor of the bill a little bit ago. I'll update on what I hear back, but IMO this has a long way to go before it becomes law.

I did hear back today from the sponsor's office, they actually called me!
Basically the person I talked to, said it does have a long way to go before it becomes law, and it has to be finished before November or it dies. It was supposed to be in the Senate today, and there's a possibility of a change that will send it back to the House; once it's approved (and any changes) by BOTH House and Senate, then it goes to the governor.
The clue is the "Last Action:" on the site linked. Until that "Last Action:" says something like "approved by the governor", or "signed into law", it's not done. When it IS law, and they ARE legal, it will change from a Bill to an Act. THEN, and ONLY then, will it become legal to own gliders in PA.

I just spent about an hour researching the laws about Pennsylvania. What I found is that Pennsylvania does NOT consider them exotic... the vast majority of their animal laws have been deleted (reserved) and there is no mention of any other animals besides the dangerous large animals. I have been looking all over for the permit information (since I want to keep a link to it on my website to show that they can't own one without a permit) but all I can find is the larger animals are illegal. http://www.pacode.com/secure/data/058/chapter137/chap137toc.htmlnotice the massive amount of deleted material... could this be how they are making gliders legal? "Exotic wildlife." The phrase includes, but is not limited to, all bears, coyotes, lions, tigers, leopards, jaguars, cheetahs, cougars, wolves and any crossbreed of these animals which have similar characteristics in appearance or features. The definition is applicable whether or not the birds or animals were bred or reared in captivity or imported from another state or nation. I can find NO mention in ANY of Pennsylvania's literature referencing any other animals. Any references seen to sugar gliders are in forums and articles, nothing concrete leading to the actual laws. In face, the laws pertaining to exotic wildlife ALL refer back to the section that I quoted above as the list of exotic animals.

Maybe they're included as wildlife or exotic wildlife?
(8) An animal, bird or egg of a bird listed by the Commonwealth or the United States Department of the Interior as threatened, endangered or injurious. (10) Game or wildlife taken alive from the wild, except the Commission may import wildlife taken from the wild for enhancement of this Commonwealth’s wild fauna. (11) Game or wild held captive. Game or wildlife held in captivity or captive bred in another state or nation. (d) A person wishing to import lawfully acquired wildlife, or parts thereof, shall first obtain an importation permit from the Commission subject to the following:
(1) Importation permits will be issued for a fee of $50 for each transaction.
(2) A person wishing to import wildlife for a menagerie, exotic wildlife possession, exotic wildlife dealer or propagation purposes shall be in possession of a menagerie, exotic wildlife possession, exotic wildlife dealer or propagation permit prior to submitting the application for an import permit. See Chapter 147 (relating to special permits).
It would be awesome if PA would allow suggies!

If you call the game warden they will tell you they are illegal. I did a few months ago. I didn't even have to explain what they were, they knew. Maybe the laws have changed since then?

I keep wishing and hoping they would. My mom would kill to see her grand fuzzies and babysit them for a weekend. I think it's so stupid that a twenty minute drive changes the legality of a pet. I am so glad I live in New York. She'll have to stick to visiting my house for the time being. Although I have been assured I could visit PA with them, it still makes me nervous so I never have. My poor mom. She loves her grand-fuzzies.

Becky, now - I may be corrected if I am wrong here but since they are illegal in PA and permits were discontinued I don't think they legally ever have to give them back. They stopped giving out permits a while ago. I think if you contact a lawyer they will simply show you that PA state law now states that sugar gliders are illegal in the state of PA and permits are no longer being given at all I wish I had better news for you.

Start a letter writing campaign to your state legislation, include informative, factual information on sugar gliders.
Also tell them how they are now legal in GA.
Bombard them with that kind of information and work on getting them made legal in PA.

I am so sorry Becky. Your story is truly heartbreaking. My mother lives in PA and I even petition for gliders to be made legal there just so I can take them to visit my mom or so she could babysit them when I would go away on vacation. As much as I usually appreciate the game commission officers in this scenario it sounds like they did indeed lie to your face I know when I talked to the three around my mom's area they simply told me that they were illegal 110%, they were not allowed in the state period, and permits were null and void and were no longer being issued and if I had an issue or complaint about the situation I was to be referred to my state representative. I am terribly sorry about your gliders Please let us know if anything changes and you hear from the game commission!

whether they are illegal or not they should not have the right to take my pets unless I neglected or abused them and I have done neither... I'm sorry that your children had to go through this, but unfortunately they did what was required of them by law. Gliders are illegal in PA and owners are subject to them being confiscated. It sounds like your gliders were very fortunate that they found a legal home for them, sometimes they just euthanize them instead.

Hi Jack!
Sugar Gliders are also illegal here in Fairfax County VA. They are legal just about everywhere else in VA but Fairfax and Prince William Counties. Guess where I live!!? I am just as frustrated and upset as you. I started a petition at change.org to have them removed from the Illegal Exotics list. Already have 300+ signatures, and I just put it up there on the 5th. I have also written a letter to the governor. I am also writing a letter to the Senator who helped changed the GA law. Wow! This is awesome! Now I need to do this to petition Mumbai India...somehow I think that would be a huge battle.

I don't think this really changes anything. It has been on the books for a long time that exotics (sugar gliders) are legal with a permit. It does not matter what the law says or how it says it if the state will not issue permits.
Even with the change in wording, permits are still required to own sugar gliders. As long as people are not able to obtain a permit, sugar gliders will remain illegal in the state.

I don't agree!! Take a look at some of these quotes from previous comments, of people who gave direct quotes from authority,They say once the bill is passed they are legal!!! also taking a look at the Bill itself, now an ACT!! Here is what they sent me "direct quote" It is illegal to import or possess sugar gliders in Pennsylvania. However, there is legislation in the General Assembly that would legalize them. Please see the link to this House Bill 1398: amended Basically sugar gliders will be legal in PA 60 days after they voted for this amended legislation. You will not need a permit, it will be just like having a parrot or gerbil.
Also in this legislation permits will no longer be issued after December 2013 unless you had a permit prior to December 2011.
But the bottom line is Sugar Gliders will be legal in PA in a few days. I did hear back today from the sponsor's office, they actually called me!

The clue is the "Last Action:" on the site linked. Until that "Last Action:" says something like "approved by the governor", or "signed into law", it's not done. When it IS law, and they ARE legal, it will change from a Bill to an Act. THEN, and ONLY then, will it become legal to own gliders in PA. http://www.legis.state.pa.us/cfdocs/legi...398&pn=3296It says that gliders are no longer under the exotics list. exotics still need to have permits, but if sugar gliders are no longer consider exotics then they are "pets" like "exotic" birds (parrots, cockatoos), ferrets, hedgehogs, etc... those animals do not need permits to be sold or housed in the state of PA because they are not considered exotic Perhaps I am misinformed and if anyone can provide other literature explaining that sugar gliders still need a permit or read this bill differently, I welcome that

The bill was re-referred to Appropriations in May 2012. Bill status That was the last action on it. It apparently has not been passed yet. It does say "Act" in the bill, but it is not an ACT until it is passed and signed by the governor.
