I keep hearing of this happening,
but what are the consequences?

The first consequence I can think of off hand is sterility.

Yes, but on the other hand there is rejection, cannabilizm, disfigured joeys ect. Plus if the offspring of inbred gliders gets sold or rebred what does that do to the genetics of the glider?? It's just not right, and had bad consequences.

Aren't most leucistic gliders inbred, at least a couple of generations back?

Also, I'm sure that many(if not most) of the joeys that are born with defects are cannabalized before they come OOP because mother gliders(like most animal mothers) know when there's something wrong.

Because of that there are probably alot of issues that we don't know about. To make matters worse, joeys that are rejected are then hand-fed and sold to be breeders. Thus passing on whatever may be wrong with them. :\

I know this is a bit off topic, but IMO, handfed joeys should ONLY be sold to pet-only homes since there could be something wrong with them that cause momma to reject them in the first place. frown

Effects of inbreeding:

Increased incidences of genetic illness
Reduction in fertility and viability of offspring
Smaller sizes - both adults and babies
Slower growth
Odd features - like crooked noses, offset eyes, etc.
Increased illnesses and decreased ability to fight off common illnesses

Those are just a few...
