I got a family of gliders today! The original owner could no longer take care of them, and I am not sure how much they knew about taking care of the little guys. For instance, they were not on a sound diet plan and were given bread for treats. So, here's my question: The original owners have been using a pillow case in the bottom of the cage for lining (to absorb the pee and poop). Is this a common practice? What do you suggest I place in the bottom of the cage? Thanks!

If the cage has a tray, the pull out kind under the wire, you can use care fresh, paper towels, or do like I do and use nothing, just clean out every couple of days. If there is no drop tray, you will have to clean the bottom of their cage every single day. Do not leave the pillowcase in there. That just ensures that they are walking around in their own waste.

And don't use pine or cedar shavings. Aspen is safe for them. Good luck with your suggies!

The lady who's selling me my little guy used pine for a base of his cage. x.x

I was told paper towels or newspaper was well. Newpaper only if you have a drop tray, though.

Hey Congratulations on the new sugar gliders and Welcome to GC.

As long as the Sugar gliders arent walking on the towel, then it isnt much of a problem, but what i'd suggest is using some type of cat litter, to cut down on the oder. This is if they have a drop tray.

Since the gliders havent been on a sound diet i must suggest you putting them on one ASAP. I personally Recommend Judies BML diet. BML works great but there are other great diets out there so dont let me stear you away from them. I believe sunkis is one of them.

As for feeding the gliders bread as a treat, I have heard that some of GC members do this. It isnt really a problem if you feed the gliders small pieces of bread every so often. Giving them to large of pieces can lead to constapation for them.

I Would suggest giving them something like Yogurt (i've heard that alot of GC members gliders like the blueberry). Its best to use a fruit flavored yogurt with little or no preservatives. Other good treats would be baby food, my glider expecially likes the sweet potatoe one. Applesause is also good. Another good benifit to these is that not only or they heatly (yogurt gives the glider calcium) but they are good as licky treats, just put some on your fingure and let the glider eat from there, this will help with bonding alot.

Safe bedding would be newspaper, paper towels, carefresh, yesterdays news, fleece, puppy pee pads, bed pads(like hospitals use),aspen. Cedar and pine both give off oils when wet that can cause respritory issues. Cat litter can be a hazzard due to the dust. If your cage has the wire floor seperating the gliders from the tray, any of these will work. I have trays under all my cages (with wire seperating them) and I don't use any bedding, just clean everyother day.

I use aspen but I amn thinking of changing to the care fresh due to odor. The aspen is nice at first but then it gets kinda stinky. I have heard care fresh takes care of the odor. Well welcome and good luck!!!

Nope care fresh is a lot worse than the aspen. I have tried everything. I have used puppy pads, newpaper, second nature puppy pellets, care fresh, paper towels. By far the best in my opinion with 26 gliders in one room has been the aspen bedding. Care Fresh would have to be replaced at least three times a week to keep the smell down. Atleast thats what I had to do. The aspen in my gliders cages(15 cages) only needs to be replaced once a week. With the care fresh os soaks up the urine but does not dry very fast once it gets wet so the odor lingers. I know this because I used to work at PETCO and we had to clean out the ferret cages twice a day because the care fresh would not keep the odor down. Obviously they are much larger but imagine twice a day. At $20 the largest bag I would go bankrupt just trying to keep the bedding from smelling!LOL. CAre fresh is good for mice and rats and maybe rabbits and guinea pigs, but I dont think its that great for gliders. Ofcourse this is just my opinion.LOL.

I use puppy pads for Blaze's cage b/c he is in the large cage and it takes a lot of bedding, that soaks up the fecal and urine matter pretty well. For Hazel and Star, I use aspen bedding. For the 2 joeys, I just fleece. :o)

A lot of people use CareFresh as well or even cage liners that are specially made for glider cages. You just have to look around.

Be sure not to use pine or cedar as it may be toxic for small animals if inhaled in large amounts. It can cause some small animals to even have upper respitory problems later on in life.

Oh yeah, my friend uses aspen pellets for the bottom of her drop tray. She recommended it to me, but it was sort of expensive. LOL

I have never tried the aspen bedding, but Carefresh lasts quite long for me. I change the bedding one every week to two weeks. I never have an odor problem and the Carefresh is never wet. It can get expensive if you have several cages, but a large bag costs me about $17 and lasts me over a months with three cages.
