I have just read this post, and I know im probably going to be jumped on for this, BUT im gonna say my piece. I recently helped someone who was in finacial trouble and was unable to get vet care for her glider. I spent hundreds helping her, and at NO time did I say ok if I help you, you have to give up your glider. Tan being told to give up her glider, how does that help really, First you have seperated her bonded pair. Secondly what happens the next time one of her gliders is sick. Shouldn't something a little more constructive be done like helping her to set up a bank account to put in even $5 a week for a vet if needed. Making people relinquish thier gliders is NOT making them become responsible it teaches them that when the going gets tough then hey just give it away.

The decision to let Abu go was entirely mine alone. Nobody forced me to give him up and it was a very hard decision to make. I am now getting petinsurance for Dante so if this happens again i will be better prepared. Thank all of you for your support and well wishes.

Rachel, the issue is that Tan is 6 hours from a vet, and this glider needs regular vet care every day for the next week, the follow up visits at 10 days, 14 days and 30 days, plus regular vet visits and probably multiple emergency visits for the rest of his life. This will be very difficult for anyone for two reasons, cost and length of the drive. He wouldn't have been able to come home for a month anyway. So, that judgement is uncalled for. No one forced Tanya to give him up, as she says. She made a very hard decision to do this. Which makes me proud of her.
Shawna Who are you networked with? Networking could save your gliders life. Create one now.

Val talked to a nice lady in Oklahoma that said she would take care of him but he has to stay with her forever
This is what was said, so you can understand where my post was coming from.
this isnt something that I said lightly, I have read over and over again on different forums ppl being TOLD to give up thier gliders when they have been financially strapped. I just dont think that is the solution.
Tan I am glad you are doing something to help yourself be better prepared.

I have read over and over again on different forums ppl being TOLD to give up thier gliders when they have been financially strapped. I just dont think that is the solution. I too have seen this happen on SEVERAL occasions. On different boards. Shouldn't something a little more constructive be done like helping her to set up a bank account to put in even $5 a week for a vet if needed. Making people relinquish thier gliders is NOT making them become responsible it teaches them that when the going gets tough then hey just give it away. I also have to agree with this statement as well. The first thing someone should do is to make sure they have a vet LOCALLY that is able to take care of the animal they are going to bring into their home. I can understand why she turned over Abu for the treatments, but I also think the original vet she took Abu to could have done phone consults with other vets to get the same procedures done and treatments done to where she did not have to send him away for good. We as a group keep talking about how we dont have enough vets available to us for gliders, but if we keep saying we can only use certain vets, how are the others ever going to get the experience. Granted, some vets dont WANT to learn, but obviously this was not the case with her vet since Abu was already treated and the area had already been lanced previously...if it is a money issue than we as a whole have to stop coming to everyones rescue and paying for them and making them be responsible for their own pets. Then others see how *easy* it is to just say you cant afford it and when they try to find a home, they are put down for it. I can see both sides here, but bottom line is, I agree with Rachael on this one...

Update Well Abu saw the vet today in Tulsa and he is not doing good. The vet said that he has soft tissue infections in his face at least three of them. Awww I'm sorry to hear that. Did the vet say what is causing the soft tissue infections? What do you think would be a better solution? And thank you for your support. As for paying for his vet care- was the option to pay the vet in payments available?

I certainly did NOT say this facial swelling was likely genetic! I have gone through this very thing with my Cheddar, and I am well aware of what must be done to get to the root of the problem and to treat it properly. Unfortunately, Abu has many issues (possibly the result of being inbred) and may have a weakened immune system, but I was very clear with Tanya that the reason this continues to recur is because it has NOT been treated correctly. Tanya is limited financially and has refused all of my offers to take Abu to MY vet in Tulsa so far. I have explained to Tanya AT LENGTH that Abu will NOT get better without proper vet care. Abu HAS been to a local vet several times for this issue. This vet DID a culture at my insistence, but then I had to call repeatedly and threaten legal action for 11 DAYS to get the results back. Since that time, Tanya has not gone to pick up the medication that the vet recommended after FINALLY reading the culture results. *I* paid for Abu's last vet visit with this vet here in Amarillo. I cannot and will not pay for any more visits for Abu. He NEEDS to see a vet that knows what they are doing. Plain and simple. I get very frustrated with continually offering help only to be told that it is "not necessary" at the moment or that it can't be afforded financially, and then coming here to read how my words have been misconstrued. Fact is, if this glider were in MY care, he would have seen MY vet months ago. I would LOVE to see him get the care he needs, but Tanya has to take the responsibility for caring for him as he needs it or give him to someone who CAN provide for him. The reality is, this glider is likely to have medical issues for the remainder of his life. I hate seeing him in this situation over and over and KNOWING it is because he has never received the proper treatment. I hate thinking that he might someday have another issue that may or may not be treated appropriately and immediately. Now we all know why it is that I drive 6 hours for a vet - the ones here are completely UNABLE to provide adequate care for sick or injured gliders. reread please.

Rachael, I agree.. Peggy, I agree, the one thing that we must do if at all possible is to help educate, get the right info to the vets that need it, be sure the resource info is out there if needed. and I will tell you Tan, not everyone can afford the mass bills, but there is usually help available if it is needed. separating a bonded pair, and sending it to another vet is not always the answer. not everyone knows what to look for and how to treat it. Removing a glider from the home should be a last resort. It seems that you had taken your glider to a vet, over and over again, you did what you were supposed to, I am sorry that you didn't have the vet resources to help educate your vet , when all this started. My prayers are with you and your gliders, both of them..
