I don't know if anyone else has experianced this . . . but last night I was having some issues with the newly OOP joey.

Earlier in the evening I found the new baby girl wandering at the top of the pouch. Remembering full and well what happened to her sister, I immediatley began supplementing. I called Bec (you're an angel) and she talked be through it. The baby gobbled down everything I gave her. So everything was fine.

Around 10pm, the little girl was at the top of the pouch again. I took her out and supplemented her and she lapped it up.

Then . . . I woke up at 1:30am to Aisha barking. I take a look and the joey is, yet again, at the top of the pouch. I supplement again, she only took a tiny bit, and put the joey back in the pouch. I laid down again and tried to doze off . . . then after about 5 mins, out of curiosity, I turned on the light to see where the joey was. She is at the top of the pouch again! FIVE MINUTES LATER!

I take her out and try supplementing her again, but she won't have any of it. Squirms and wiggles and just doesn't want any wanter or formula. So I put her back in the pouch. She climbs right back up. I give her to Aisha and she climbs right back up. I give her to Aisha again and she climbs right back up. Do you see the cycle?

Until 6 am I am switching from trying to feed the joey formula, to trying to put her back in with her mom, aunt and father. She won't stay in the pouch and when I would hold her trying to get her to drink the formula it looked like she was just falling asleep. Eventually she started to look like she was becoming dehydrated because she wouldn't take the formula and she wouldn't nurse from mama (she'd only run). It took me about an hour but I force fed her some water and some formula. Then I tried one more time to put her in with mama before setting up the rejected joey house. This time Aisha took her and she stayed. She hasn't appeared at the top of the pouch since.

Anyone have any thought on this behavior? Should I plan on pulling her if she does this again? There aren't any marks on her indicating that she is being hurt by any of her family. But I'm at a total loss as to why she didn't want to go back to mama, papa and aunty.

I wonder if her mom is rejecting her. Maybe the little girl thinks you are her mommy now. I'm sorry, I don't know. Good luck

Did Ashia pay attention to the joey when you gave her back? I read somewhere that when a newly OOP joey wanders, it's because the joey wants food. So, if mom wasn't paying attention to the joey, I have to think the joey was being rejected, but since you said the joey was with mom now and was fine...?
Perhaps somebody with more experience can help you.

[:"green"]I'm very sorry I didn't catch this post earlier... Hopefully the joey is doing okay.
When a joey keeps trying to get out of the nest, it is usually because they are not getting enough to eat & so they're looking for food. I would continue to supplement this joey at least 4 times a day and would pull the joey & hand-raise it if there are any signs that the parents are not taking care of it at all or if they attack the joey at all. Did you make sure the joey was warm before you tried to feed it the other night? If a joey is cold, it will not drink. It needs to feel warm to your touch... If you haven't already done so, please read Hand Raising A Joey... You will find a lot of vital information that may help you even further with your joey's situation...

Last night I found the joey VERY emaciated and dehydrated. It doesn't look like she had been fed at all since I had last supped her. I fed her the wambaroo formula and a CC of water twice before bed. At 5am she didn't seem very hungry so I topped her off and put her back in with the family.

I'm really debating on wether or not to just pull her and feed around the clock. At night they all leave her in the pouch alone for extended periods of time. I thought that this behavior would pass in time, but it seems as though they are doing it more often now and for longer.

Sugarglidersuz - I've been keeping their room/my room at about 80+ everynight since they started leaving her in the pouch alone. When I was supplementing her I had heated the fleece for a few minutes and I sat by the little heater to make sure she was warm enough to digest the food. So I think she was warm enough. Maybe too warm?

What is everyones opinion on pulling her? I'm really afraid that they will leave her for too long and she will die from hypothermia. I'm preparded to feed her around the clock. My employer has agreed to let me bring her to work so I can supp every two hours. And I already have a rejected joey "cage" ready for her.

Thanks for the help, this board is a real life saver

Oh I forgot to mention . . . sometimes, when I peek in during the day the joey is by herself a one end of the pouch while everyone else piled up at the other end of the pouch.

When I give the joey back to Aisha they all usually take her and clean her, but once it is food time or play time they are all anxious to leave her.

Their behavior frustrates me, my females are two years old. I was hoping they would be mature enough to raise joeys. Melfina rejected hers a few weeks ago and now Aisha is doing the same thing

[:"green"]From what you are describing, they are rejecting her. At this point, I would pull her & start to hand-raise her. If you don't, the next step is that they will attack her & possibly cannibalize her. I don't condone just pulling a joey to hand-raise unless there are dire circumstances. From what you have described, I believe that pulling is really the only option at this point if she is going to survive. If you need anything, please let me know via PM...

Thank you so much for your help. I'll pull her ASAP when I go home for lunch. I would be devistated if they hurt the little girl.

I read that rejecting is very rare . . . and now, it has happened twice in the past month I hope these two girls aren't repeat offenders . . .

Rejecting isn't very rare.. it does happen but not as often as people think since that is all they see in the breeding and babies section.

Some parents are just not cut out to be parents. Just becuase they reject once doesn;t mean they will do it again though. SOmetimes the first joey they have is just all a new experience for them also so they don't know what to do with it.

I am sorry this is happening again I also think it is time to pull her and hand raise her. Suz is a great mentor when it comes to hand raising.

My mother, my boyfriend and myself are all going to be feeding her and keeping her happy around the clock. Thank you so much, I will be sure to contact someone if we have any problems. I have Bec's number and an internet connection so I can PM you Suz. She is a really docile sweety so I hope I won't have any problems feeding her.

Oh, I thought I read somewhere is was rare. But you are right, anytime someone does have a rejected joey it is posted on here. We don't hear about every healthy joey. So it seems like it happens more often than not. That makes sense

Again, Thank you so much.

Thank you! I just got back from lunch. Her skin is flaky so she was pretty dehydrated. I can also see her ribs I feel so guilty for being indecisive so long!

The good news is, I fed her 1 and a half CC's of wambaroo mix and 1/4 CCs of water. She's going slowly with drinking it but I think she's doing pretty good.

I think when I get off of work I'll need to get some pedyalite? Right now she is in my bra snug as a bug.
