http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/displaycode?section=fgc&group=02001-03000&file=2116-2127I posted this earlier this week on another thread. I had a LA county officer contact me when I lived in AZ. He took in a bunch of gliders that were in a home. He was actively trying to get them out of the state, but told me that he and his colleges could only do this in their own spare time. The usual thing was to bring them to the vet to have them put down. He told me, most of the others who worked with him, would not take time from their personal lives, and take the easy way out. I got him in contact with a rescue in a different state. I'm sure he continues to do this, but not so sure about his co-workers. If you want to take that kind of chance, but I don't think it's worth it. If you look at the list I sent, it says all orders of Marsupials--pouched animals. That's a sugar glider. They are illegal there. Just because others own them, they are breaking the law and if caught, will suffer the same as anyone else.

Elena your babies are always welcome here! I know what it is like to miss your home. I love my life in Ohio but Texas calls me back on a pretty regular basis.
Back to the topic - Please do not take gliders into California. You are putting their lives at stake and it is just a matter of time before someone finds out.

No Tobi, They won't issue permits to own these babies in California. Just remember this too if you ever had an emergency and needed a vet you wouldn't be able to take them in for the fear of the vet having to turn you in for having an illegal pet. I know this is sad and going to be very hard for you but I wouldn't risk my babies either.

Just remember this too if you ever had an emergency and needed a vet you wouldn't be able to take them in for the fear of the vet having to turn you in for having an illegal pet. This isnt true at all. Most vets care about the well being of the animal. SOME vets care about the money and can charge absurd amounts because they are treating an illegal animal. vets are NOT required to turn in people with illegal pets, as they are not breaking laws treating them. However the biggest problem is that there arent many glider knowledgeable vets in illegal states. I just checked the GC vet database and it lists 17 sugar glider knowledgeable vets in Ca. That number surprises me... California currently does not issue permits, and they probably wont allow gliders for some time, since the fight to make ferrets legal has been going on a long time without prevail. Your best bet is to stay in oregon or pick another state :/ or to rehome your babies. Maybe you can look in to starting some kind of petition or something to see if we can get the ball rolling on making them legal there??

My best suggestion to you is to live in Nevada or Arizona or Utah....right close to the California state line. Is that an option?
I've decided that there are SEVERAL states that you'll never catch me living in: Massachusettes, Pennsylvania, California, Hawaii, or Alaska. I won't run the risk of having my babies where they're not welcome...telling me they're not welcome is just like them saying I'm not welcome! So fine.....I ain't moving, game over!

The thing is, with a lot of persistance and a lot of knowledge about the animal, you can work to change the law. It was done in Georgia couple of years ago. They were illegal in that state too, but some educated glider people presented to the legislators all their knowledge on gliders and that they would not be able to survive in the outdoors there and ruin the local flora and fauna. They won and a new law passed. In the state of Georgia, you may own sugar gliders, so long as you purchase them from a USDA breeder. If Georgia residents can do it, California people can do it too. If California is open to some medical products, I do not see why they cannot be influenced to change the laws on some exotics. Instead of trying to skirt the law, be proactive and work to change it.

California has a problem with them due to other invasive species - like ferrets. It was NOT all that long ago that there was a house bill trying to ban exotics across the US. Florida especially has a lot of problems as a port of entry for boas and other animals that outgrow what your typical family home can support and end up released into the local habitat. Florida, being such a nice sultry place, tends to support the critters instead of having them die off like the case would be in Alaska.

We are not trying to make you into a bad person. Many before you have asked our opinion, and just didn't listen. Some had to be bailed out later.
We didn't know your stand on the issue. A lot are of the mind that they don't care, and they are going to do it anyway. You, obviously are different.
We just try to lay all the facts out, so hopefully, you make the right decision if and when the time comes for you to make the move.
Yes. It is possible to present the facts to any place they are illegal and as long as you have good and correct answers for them, it may help overturn the law, or like with Georgia, just have some stipulations.
Doesn't matter that you are 19. You are old enough to vote, so your voice matters. If you so wanted to try if you became a resident, you would have as good a chance as anyone.

Well, it is kind of crazy that Flordia allows them (as it would be a suitable place for them to live in the wild) and places like Alaska and Massachusetts are not. It would be a pity though to those who do live in Florida if they outlawed them, for the ones who are responsible and caring owners who already have them. Many are even USDA breeders. I know several of them.

I'd have to say if they became illegal in OR, as much as I love my home and my family here, I'd leave. I'm NOT rehoming my babies. I love them tooooo much! They're like my very own children!!!! Tobi, I'm sorry you're having to deal with this, but my offer still stands. I can either foster for you and help find a good home (I've rehomed some of the rescues I took in after clear vet checks and some diet rehabilitation and turned down a LOT of people because they didn't 'pass' my 'requirements'.) I could also be their permanent home. I'm not opposed to anything. I'd be sure to keep in contact with you and sending UTD pics. Anything I can do to help, I will. I'm, again, so very sorry you are having to go through this, whatever your reasons to be moving are.

It is frustrating that there is such a problem with other exotics that it is spilling over into animals like gliders that have been kept for years in the US without any major problems. I'm sure a few have gotten loose here or there, but I've yet to see the news report "Aussie Marsupial Ousts Brown Squirrels" tonight at 11.

I will keep you in mind should things come to that! Luckily it is looking like they may not, should things keep going in the direction they are.. My fiancée is warming up to the idea of us living here. And I am definitely going to look into getting California to allow permits, I find it just like animal cruelty if they are going to just take animals and put them to sleep despite how nice they may be just because of the situation they were in.
