My one glider Coco's pouch looks very normal to me. Nice and pink and furry inside.

My other glider skittles looks very weird to me. Its wrinkeled and when i spread it open with my fingers it is red and no fur and has these bumpy looking things all over it and somewhat looks like there may be a bump with fluid? Im not really sure how to describe it. She is acting normal but she does not let me get a very good look at it either. Does this sound normal?

No, this does not sound normal....a normal glider's pouch should look and feel just as your described it with your first glider....pink, furry, and smooth. Redness, bumps, possible fluid are all indications of a pouch infection...a vet visit is needed. What you worry about here is self-mutilation if she does in fact have an infection because she might be in pain...do you have an e-collar on hand just in case?

If I were you, I'd take her into a vet ASAP so she can be appropriately examined and then treated with medication if needed....

This sounds like a pouch or yeast infection. I'd suggest going to the vet and having an ecollar handy just in case, as both are very painful.

Shannon, I just got the pics. This is bad and she needs immediate vet care!

I would agree with needing immediate vet care. One of my gliders is working on getting over a pouch infection. I noticed something weird about 2 weeks ago and just kept watching her for about a week and took her to the vet last friday and she had gotten a lot worse in just a day. Because it was a bacterial infection it also lead to HLP which can be very serious if not caught early enough. Thankfully she is doing better but is on 4 different meds twice a day right now. Keep us updated and let us know how your baby is doing

This is bad we have no money and my husband wont let me take her to the vet. We have home owners insurance to pay for and are waiting on our taxes to help pay off credit cards. This is happening at such a bad time. We do our taxes tomorrow. I don't know what to do. I am so scared right now.

Your little one needs immediate vet care (if Connie says so, I believe it...). You can apply for Care Credit online, which gives you 6-12 months interest free on vet care. You can also explain your situation to a vet and ask if you can either have deferred payments or get on a payment plan, even if its only something like $15 a month....most vets are willing to work with you, especially in the case of an emergency like this. To be sorta sneaky about it, just show up unannounced at the vet's office and explain your situation in person. Only a jerk vet will turn you away with a sick animal in hand, especially if you tell him you've applied for Care Credit and will work on paying your bill. Those are just a few options. Regardless, your baby is sick and needs medical attention ASAP....

Can you tell your husband that she's in extreme pain and could die? Maybe if you cried? Begged? Bargained? What about a relative or friend? Is there anyone you can get to help you and you can pay them back with your taxes? Do you work? Maybe your boss could give you an advance? Is there anything you can pawn?

She's on her way to the vet!

A pouch infection is definately not something can wait on and it will NOT heal on its own. She really needs to see a vet ASAP.

I too have an 8 year old girl who is recovering from a pouch infection. First I noticed that she had lost a little bit of weight and the next morning I could tell her pouch looked wrong. I took her in and she was dehydrated (because of her infection), she had to be subque'd 3 times (twice at the vet that day and once a few days later for her recheck) and is on medication and her pouch has also had to be thouroughly cleaned (by the vet).

My little girl is doing much better and I caught it early enough before it got worse.

When it comes to gliders you really need to get them into a vet at the FIRST chance you notice there is a problem because they can go downhill very fast.

Where there is a will there is a way.

Connie, can you tell me.. Why might a glider, one that hasn't had joeys ever, or recently, get a pouch infection?

The pouch is a cavity that has an opening. It is warm and moist. Any such type thing is vunerable to bacteria getting in and growing.

I'm afraid you'll have to ask someone with more experience. I really don't know. My best guess is a female just maturing and being over zealous in cleaning her pouch or perhaps an accidental scratch that got infected.

Teresa, the vet is giving her Baytril and Meloxicam. He said the Meloxicam will provide pain relief, similar to advil in humans. I did a quick search and only found the anti-inflammatory properties. Do you know about this med?

Thanks. I knew this much. I just thought MAYBE there were more reasons.

I am on Meloxicam...it's the generic form of Mobic...I take the drug for Rheumatoid Arthritis...I've been on it for about 6-7 years now...I have to say, while it IS an anti-inflammatory and does help with inflammation or swelling in my joints, it does NOT help with actual pain...it's not a pain medication, it's just meant to bring down swelling, which I guess indirectly could bring down pain, but I usually take SEPARATE pain medication....Meloxicam is in a group of medications called NSAIDS...Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammtory Drugs.....

Meloxicam is Metacam (Metacam is the brand name used by vets)

Right now, she does need both antibiotics AND an anti-inflamitory pain med. It should NOT be used more than three days normally due to risk to the liver. With the swelling as severe as this glider's though, it might be worth the risk of using it up to 5 days but that has to be the owner's decision.

If the swelling goes down in the next three days, I would switch to Torb for pain management.

Home from the vet...She has been givin her meds, lots of love and treats from mommy and is set up in her hospital cage next to her sister. They are so sad to be seperated. Coco is so mad at me and actually tried to bite me when I went in to say hi to her.

I will be getting up every 2 hours or so to make sure she is out and eating and drinking. I am hoping with the meds and being away from her sister (who grooms her constantly) that she will get better without an e-collar but I will be keeping a VERY close eye on her.

I was so nervous tonight and in tears when I saw the extent of her infection. The vet did not seem to worried about it tho and just kinda acted like yup here is some meds and no pain killers or e-collar. I am still shocked by this. I will keep everyone updated on her progress tho.

Thank you for acting so quickly with her. It can be very hard to keep calm when you know your little one is in trouble or ill.

The metacam (meloxicam) will help with the pain some and will help with the swelling. I would follow up with your regular daytime vet in a couple of days and ask for some torb. She may or may not need it but you would rather have it and not need it than the other way around.

Oh, you can probably let her and her sister have supervised visits with each other. Just don't let her sister groom her pouch area.

The metacam (meloxicam) can cause liver issues with gliders. It is generally suggested not to give to a glider for more than 3 days. But your glider has very serious inflamation going on with this infection and the med should help with that.

It is impossible for us to tell you NOT to use it for the 10 days as we are not vets and she is not our glider. I personally would not give it more than 5 days at the most. With the baytril (the antibiotic) you should start seeing signs of improvement in a few days and you'll be more able to make the decision about the other med. Again, it has to be your choice. Talk to your vet about the potential for side effects (to the liver and kidneys).

Ok I will be putting a call into my regular vet in the morning to ask him all these questions. Thanks again everyone. Gonna go try and get some sleep. My human children wake up very early lol

If it were me, I would not give the meloxicam for more than 5 days max, and that is only because of how severe this infection is. As Teresa mentioned earlier, it will help with the swelling, but there should be a major difference after being on antibiotics for 2-3 days. I also agree about going to your regular vet and asking for some torb. I'd think you could take the vet records from tonight to your vet, to get the torb, without having to bring her in.

The bra wearing will probably comfort her. She's sick and will want/need her mommy!

Hey Shannon, thank you so much for updating! You are a WONDERFUL glider mommy . There are SO many on here who tell us their babies are sick, we tell them a vet is absolutely needed, and then they give every excuse under the sun why they can't take them to the vet or just flat out say no....CONGRATS TO YOU for being a responsible, loving mommy and making sure your baby is well taken care of!

Shannon...like I said last night (this morning??? LOL), give Dr. Medlin or Dr. Stahl a call this morning and tell them what the doc told us last night and about the course of treatment. I was looking back in my records and the Metacam they prescribed for Bandit after his neuter was 3-5 days, just as everyone is telling you. I agree that they should give her some pain meds and not to use the Metacam for more than that period of time.

Wow that is horrible looking. My little girl that is getting over one did not look that bad at all!

Skittles seems to be doing better this morning. Her pouch already seems like it is starting to go down. She ate all her blended last night but did not touch her fruits or veggies. I tried to give her some fruit this morning but she wouldn't take it. She took her meds good tho and took some mealies and some water. I will be keeping her on me all day to make sure she is leaving her pouch alone!

It was very hard to get my husband to let me take her. I had to borrow money from my brother and my husband was still upset that I did that. He does not care for them like I do obviously. But I am glad that I just went with my gut instinct and went even tho he was mad at me for going.

It's so hard to deal with him and explain why she had to be seen. If he had his way he would have just left her to suffer.

Let me just say how proud I am of you! You did what a loving, responsible, compassionate mommy would do - you took your baby to a vet to get the treatment she needed even though it caused friction with your husband (which I'm very sorry to hear). You borrowed money from your brother (what a great brother you must have!), which is great that he was available to help you out financially. I know it must have been difficult to not see eye-to-eye with your husband, but you were 100% right to follow your gut and get her to a vet....she has YOU now to thank for feeling much better! Your bond with her will only be stronger because of it. Congrats on getting your little one well and we're all here to support you throughout this time .

Thank you! I can already tell that she is thanking me lol she wants to be with me at all times right now. I put her in her pouch to give her her meds and she kept climbing out and climbing on me to get into my shirt lol. She is definitely my very sweet baby and even the vet last night could not believe how sweet she was!

I called her regular vet and they are calling the er to have the records from last night faxed over to them and are going to look over the meds and give me a call back and schedule a re check for me. My dad is going to lend me for that thankfully. I go to do my taxes tonight and will be able to pay my brother and my dad back when my money comes in.

I am so glad that they were able to help me through this bc if not I may have been at pawn shops all morning trying to get money somehow. Lol. But seriously I would do anything to make sure she is well cared for.

My husbands way of thinking is he would do ANYTHING for our human children but when it comes to the animals they are the last I the money expense line and if we don't have it we just can't do anything about it.

But if I have my way from now on I will be putting 20 dollars every week into an account for them cause I will not go through the heartache that I was feeling last night. Even if I have to ask him to just give me 20 dollars for the kids each week and then I put it away for the gliders!

Shannon that's a great idea! It may seem like a small amount, $20, but if you're faithful about it, you'd be surprised just how quickly it'll add up! Plus, alot of vets will be totally willing to work with you on a payment schedule and if your vet knows that you're putting money away on a regular basis, he or she I bet will be very flexible in letting you pay as you go....PLEASE keep us regularly updated, you and your baby are in my thoughts and I'm hoping everything goes smoothly for you!

Update: Just got off the phone with my regular vet. I had emailed him the pics and he said that she is definitely inflamed and it looks to be a bacterial pouch infection. Said that he agrees with the baytril for the full 10 days and that the meloxicam he only wants me to give it for 5-7 days max. Said to send him pics on the 5th day and he would let me know if he wanted me to continue on to the 7th day or not. But said DEFINITELY not 10. So I am happy with his answer on that. I will be going in for a recheck with him in 10 days and he is going to continue to check in with me on her progress. They are so nice there! I am so glad Aimee referred me to her vet when I first got my monkeys.

Skittles has done great today. She is drinking and taking treats. Her and her sister are sleeping peacefully in my bra right now. Neither is trying to groom at all. It will be sad and break my heart when I have to separate them again tonight. They both just sit there staring at each other.

But we are on the path to recovery and my heart could not be more fulfilled right now knowing that I am doing and going to do everything I can for my babies!

Update on skittles: she didn't eat anything last night she left blended and never touched her fruits and veggies. I tried to offer her water this morning and she wouldn't take it, then I tried to offer baby applesauce and she wouldn't take that either. She took 3 mealies but was hesitant. She is my glider that will take a finger off for a mealie. She is definitely not herself yet. Her pouch is looking much better and is not as inflammed or swollen but still has a ways to go to be looking healthy and normal.

Called Aimee this morning cause I was worried about the eating and drinking. I syringes some water into her and gave her some peach juice from some diced peaches by a syringe as well. I did a tent test and her skin came down slow so I know she is a little dehydrated. I am going out tonight to get some puppy milk replacer and am going to syringe that to her tonight cause she will not willing take anything right now.

I just wish she would get better she is just not herself right now All she wants to do is curl up in my bra with her sister and sleep. I am worried cause I know how fast they can go downhill all I can tell myself is that I am doing everything I can to keep her hydrated and fed right now.

Shannon, you can get baby food fruits, vegetables and meats and feed her those through a syringe also. It's what I had to do with Brodie when he wasn't interested in eating. It definately takes longer this way, and you have to feed multiple times throughout the day so they get enough, but it does help.

The meds she's on will cause lack of appetite. At this point, let her eat anything she'll eat, unless it's toxic. Roo favored vanilla pudding, chicken baby food, organic peanut butter, avocado and HPW. Also give her pedialyte. Right now, the dehydration is the most important issue. Dehydration can also cause lack of appetite. Get her rehydrated, and she'll eat a little better. Because of the meds and dehydration, you'll really have to push both fluids and food. I would do it every couple of hours.

Do you know how to sub-q?

Yeah I am pushing baby foods as well. I got a milk supplement at petsmart so I am gonna try a little of that if she will take it. I worked for a vet for 6 years and had to sub-q all the time but I don't have a bag or needles...would not even kno where to get them from...

You should be able to get the supplies from your vet.

You won't wreck the bond you have with her...she knows you're helping her and you'd be surprised, your bond might be strengthened when all is said and done. She doesn't like the medicine but she knows you love her and that you're doing what's best. It may not show, but trust me...it'll all be okay.

Hey, I have to second what Aimee said...I can tell you that when my Gizmo had a seizure a few years ago and had to go on a calcium supplement that he HATED, I was afraid I was going to ruin our bond because I had to force it into by syringe....both he and I dreaded medication time....however, I honestly have to say that our bond grew even tighter and stronger because A) I was giving him lots of extra attention while I was watching for him to feel better, just like you're doing with your little girl, and B) he knew in the end I was only doing it out of love and concern for his health...I know that last part sounds silly, but these little ones honestly do pick up on our extreme love for them and they return it to us 10-fold....your bond will be absolutely fine, if anything, I bet you notice how even MORE attached to you she becomes...you're doing a wonderful job and I agree, give her whatever she'll eat as long as it's not on the forbidden food list....please keep us updated and let us know whatever you need, we'll be your support system!

P.S. Aimee, you're great, thanks for being such a lifesaver in this situation!

Hey all! Thought I'd give an update on Skittles. Why, you ask? Well...Shannon is working all weekend, some seriously LONG hours (can you say 26 hours in two days????) and she was of course worried about Skittles. So, I've got both girls here at my house for the weekend to make sure this little baby gets the love and attention she well deserves.

I spent a couple of hours this afternoon with Shannon...we looked at Skittles' pouch and it's looking MUCH better! She's getting her energy back and so far, although she's been dealing with some slight dehydration issues, she's doing very well!

Right now, the girls are playing together in their cage. I'll be staying in their room tonight and for as long as they're able, I'll let them stay together. My alarms are set for every hour so I can check on them but I'm crossing my fingers that they'll be able to play together throughout the evening. So far so good...they're having fun, playing and Skittles has LOADS of energy - she's even been running in her wheel. It's very apparent she's on the mend. Shannon has done a FANTASTIC job with her - countless hours on the couch and checking on her to make sure she's getting what she needs. I can't say enough about what a wonderful mommy she is to these girls!

Weights on the girls tonight were great, I'm very pleased and I've gotten Skittles to drink some water and gliderade and they've both been dabbling at the food, but right now, they're just so happy to be together that food is the last thing on their minds.

That's the update for now...just wanted everyone to know that she's doing better and to say "wooo hooooo, Shannon - you're awesome!"

Thank you but the credit goes to Shannon. She took care of Skittles when she needed it most and has done some excellent continuing care. It's making MY job much easier this weekend!

Aimee, thanks for the update! It is soooo good to hear that this little peanut is getting better and better. I had tears in my eyes when I read that you took the girls for the weekend - you're a total "Auntie Aimee" to those babies!

I agree, Shannon has done a tremendous job with Skittles - it's always wonderful to see owners who get understand the significance of owning a pet and treating it as a real part of the family with real needs.

Congrats to Shannon for helping her little one heal and kudos to you Aimee for doing some "peanut-sitting" for the weekend! Getting up every hour....you go girl! Keep us updated on how little Skittles is progressing!

You know I won't be able to pass up a chance to update! I'll resist the urge to do it hourly when I'm awake... but I WILL do it throughout the weekend!

Or rather, it's gonna be a LOUD night haha...Ruthie somehow makes her wheel sound as loud as gun fire lol....that's such good news though that she's running in the wheel!! (unless it's her sister of course, not that that's not a great thing too lol...)....I'm up all night Aimee, so hourly updates are great in my eyes haha....

Well, the night with the girls was a success! I was up to check on them hourly and they were able to play AND nap together in their cage without a problem, rather than having to separate them. Yayyyy!!!!!

Yay, I was waiting to hear how the girls had done! That's great news! Now to prepare for Night #2! lol

Night two was even better!! The girls ate ALL their blended and nearly all their veggie and played and played. Skittles has so much energy and her hydration is back up and she's doing well! This morning, she met me at the door of the cage for mealies and went NUTS - she's definitely feeling better. Checked her pouch last night and this morning and it looks wonderful! She takes her meds like a champ and is just so incredibly sweet. Neither is paying attention to Skittles' pouch, which has been the biggest concern with the two of them together because Coco has been wanting to help Skittles and "fix" her. Sweet victory!

Ahhhhhhhh, some wonderful news to make my morning! You're doing such a great job glider-sitting, I'm sure those little girls are content and happy. Also glad to hear that Skittles is continuing to make progress and that neither she nor her sister is trying to make that pouch "all better." Since I assume they're going home today, Shannon will have to make sure she takes over on updating us on how Skittles is doing. I bet you'll miss them Aimee! Thanks for the update!

I've got the girls until tomorrow since Shannon is working until late this evening. She's so lonesome for her babies, I know she'll be happy to have them home and will continue to update!

Oh my. Shannon, Aimee I just saw this! Poor Skittles and poor Shannon to have to go thru such an ordeal. I met both these wonderful ladies at the MonkeyPalooza. It makes me sad to read this. I am glad Skittles is doing much better!!

Shannon, something I do with my gliders, well 6 out of 8, know what a syringe is because I give them water or juice thru 1 when we are out so that they know a syringe isn't always "bad". Or if if there are meds to be given I will mix it with some yogurt so the taste isn't so bad.

Shannon, let me know if I can help in anyway, Jeff and I aren't too far away. Have you applied for Care Credit?

Skittles is doing GREAT!! She and Coco have been together for two nights now and all day in their pouch and no one is bothering to "fix" things anymore. I brought Skittles out this evening for her meds and afterwards, she ran to Brian for comfort from this big, bad lady! Just thought I'd share.







And once she realized she was safe from the meanie, here's what happened:

I don't need praise here. Shannon took care of the hard part...I got the easy part of just following up and making sure she continued to get the care she needed through the weekend. I feel fortunate that we live close to one another so I could be a part of it and help out. I can't tell you how happy it makes me that she's on the mend.

Ohhhhhhhhhh, pictures!!!!! Aimee, thanks for that, she's adorable! I love how she curled right up and went to sleep! I smile everytime I read an update that says such good things. I bet Shannon cannot wait to see her baby girls! She's lucky she has someone experienced like you to lean on in her time of need...very awesome. Keep updating, I love reading this thread!

Isn't she cute?? And she's SUCH a cuddler, it's amazing! Brian couldn't believe it...all she wanted was to be loved and petted by him. It's always heartwarming when something so small is hurting so badly, yet has the strength and the will to pull through like she did. She has some weight to gain back but she'll get there. I fed avocado last night and they ate every single bite so we probably added a little weight and made the girls very, very happy!

I am so happy to hear Skittles is doing so well.

I can not say enough good things about the nicest, kindest person that Aimee is!! I was so worried about having to work all weekend. I had to work 12-12 Saturday and 12-11 last night. And I just knew that my husband would not be able to handle the kids and then deal with a sick glider.

It brought tears to my eyes when Aimee said that she would come down and get them for the weekend. She has been amazing through this whole situation and helped me out so much and I could not thank her enough! I hope one day I can return the favor! I am so lucky to have such a great friend and glider Auntie that lives so close to me!

I am so thankful that Skittles is doing so much better! I can not wait to see her and cuddle both her and Coco all day lol.

Thank you Aimee for updating on here all weekend. I just got on and read all the great updates and I can not stop smiling!! Everyone on here is just so great and the support that I have gotten through this whole situation has just been absolutely AMAZING and I could not ask for a better group of people to be able to talk to!!

Yeah I am a server for Famous Daves and I can only work weekends cause my husband works till 7 every night during the week. So ALL my weekends are that long It is rough but the money is good.

Oh I am more than over the moon about Skittles doing so much better!! I can not wait to see her and see how much better her pouch looks! I am just so happy that coco and her can be together in the same cage cause they were just sooo sad to be separated. Aimee did such a great job making sure that they did good together over night!

Now that she is eating again I will be sure to give her lots of extra's to get some weight back on her!

I feel like the luckiest person ever! I DO get to see these girls often (although Shannon DOES hog them in her bra most of the time ). I LOVE it!!!

MY GIRLS ARE HOME!!!

Skittles was so happy to see me!! I took her out and she instantly DOVE down my shirt and made herself at home. Aimee and I thought that was great lol!! Her pouch looks SO much better!!

I will definitely continue to update and will be in touch with Dr. Medlin tomorrow to make her a recheck appointment!!

I was telling Aimee that over the weekend while I was at work I missed the monkeys so much that I was keeping my cell phone in my bra just to have something there cause I was missing the feeling of them being in there lmao!!!
