The vet said he would call Dr. Pat (he couldn't do it right that second, they were very busy) and I told him to call me if Dr. Pat said anything that he needed to deal with. The stitches are temporary, and come out tomorrow morning. I also explained to him a bit more about what happened with Simba. He seemed to take all of my concerns to heart. Samson is doing fine. Isn't messing with the area at all, and I have some medication to give him tonight and the next few following nights.

The way I see it, Jen, is like this. If you had a skin kid and something was seriously wrong, the doctor says XYZ. It involves a major surgery. Are you going to say 'oh ok' or would you want a second opinion? Add to that a LOT of people are saying 'this is not a good idea' and shows you proof. Would you let the doctor do it anyway, or are you going to see about finding out more from other doctors? (Hope that makes sense.) I don't know how you view your animals, but I see mine as my children. I treat them with the same exact dignity and respect as I do my human child. That being said, it doesn't matter if you hurt the vets feelings. I'm not saying be a you know what. You can approach the subject calmly and respectfully, but still be matter of fact. Approach your vet and tell him: 'I'm really concerned about this procedure done on Samson. I know somebody who just recently went through an eerily identical situation and it's been a heckish ride and many times over they weren't sure her little guy was going to make it. Her vet consulted with other vets that are EXTREMELY knowledgeable in this stuff and if it weren't for those consults, her glider most assuredly would not have made it. I would really appreciate it if you did the same.' Offer the phone numbers. But this is a dire situation that cannot wait any longer. Those stitches need to come out. I don't want Samson, or you, to go through what Simba and Brandi have gone through and are continuing to go through. Here's that thread if you're not familiar with the story: Part OnePart TwoPart ThreePart Four

I'm not sure where they are getting it either, Cora. I am thinking about calling the vet before they close to see if he actually has called Dr. Pat like he said that he would. I may be sleeping, though, since DH will be home at that time to keep an eye on Samson to make sure he doesn't mess with anything, then I'll be able to stay up through out the night. Thanks Karen!

@Megs
I already posted above that I explained to him about Simba, and what went on there, and asked him to call Dr. Pat. He said that he would. He also said that he would call me if something was up. I didn't see your post as it was posted while I was typing. I had stopped for a minute to get something. I saw it after I posted and just didn't feel the need to edit. Sorry.

I hope this wasn't in reference to what I said. I wasn't trying to be mean by any means. I'm EXTREMELY compassionate. I stated I don't know how she views her animals (I treat mine just like my human child) because many people DON'T see them as they do humans. IE: My mother loves animals and is great with them, but thinks I give my animals too much respect. Not to go off topic. Just trying to clarify. I'll shush now.

Thank you for the update. I will continue to keep Samson in my thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery. Also, please keep in mind that vets can be very busy and unfortuantely they are not able to always get things done as quickly as we would like. So even if your vet was able to call Dr. Pat, Dr. Pat may not have been available right at that minute. I know its really hard to be patient. I thought I was going crazy when I was waiting on results for Ivey's cancer. I was also calling my vet way more than I needed too about her consulting with another vet. Luckily they were very patient with me, but I'm sure I was getting aggrivating and annoying. LOL So do please keep in mind that both vets still have other patients than just our gliders. As important as our babies are to us, the other owners of pets feel the same way about theirs and our vets can only do what they can get done in the time they have to do it.

If his nose is *really* turning purple or something, then he isn't getting enough air and it is too tight. HOWEVER, it is very normal for the nose to change color at first - they are fighting the collar and that does use more oxygen. You shouldn't be concerned for the first bit of color change, only if it is staying that way or is really really dark.
I am hoping for the best for you two!

His nose tends to be on the darker side most of the time, so I'll be sure to watch it.
I really hate to have to put him in that collar, but I need some sleep tonight. I figured I'd do it while I gave him his meds, and measured him for an ejacket, and just get everything done in one blow so I don't have to mess with him again.
At the rate he is fighting with it, though, I'm not gonna be able to feed him for a while. Dishes will go flying.

Awwww poor little man. He'll tucker himself out soon enough, and if he is really pulling and tugging and it is staying on, I think you've got it set just right. You may need to hand-feed him some or use one of the bird silos for the BML or HPW (I don't know what staple you feed, sorry) to make sure he gets some while in the collar.

I just put the ecollar on him. He HATES it. Also gave him his meds which was much easier than what I thought it would be.
How can I tell if the ecollar is too tight? If he's crabbing, he can breathe. If you can see him breathing, it's ok. You should be able to slip a fingernail between it and his neck, but no more space than that. Here are videos of a glider fighting an ecollar. He stopped after twenty minutes. I have him in a sattelite at the moment. I also have a shotglass handy if I need to switch. His nose is still a normal color, so I'm taking that as a good sign. I do hope he tires himself out soon, it sucks to see him fight with it so. Samson is doing exactly like the video, pushing his head down and everything. My poor kid. ETA: I attempted to help him out eating, he really wasn't interested in it at the moment. He's more interested in fighting with the collar. I don't have any silos handy. I'll pick some up tomorrow if I need to. I left the dishes for now, and I'll try again after he has had some time to settle down.
