If Sugar Gliders are monogamous in nature, then why do the males try to breed with their daughters? :o

Gliders are not monogamous. Although they do bond with each other, males will breed with any female that goes into heat around him. tounge

Also, animals don't have a sense of morals likes humans do, thus they see nothing wrong with inbreeding.

They live in colonies where there are several females in nature. Definitely not monogamous.

An alpha male in the wild can have more than one colony he 'services'. There is usually and alpha female in each colony and then subordinate males and females. They are no where near monogamous. wink

Correct me if I am wrong, but I seem to remember that in nature the males move to a new colony every 2 years to prevent inbreeding.

Ive heard that too. Maybe the reason they do inbreed now is because they are captive and we prevent them from doing it.

I always heard that it was the young that moved on (like how we see the 'teenage' phase in gliders). dunno

I imagine there is still some inbreeding that occurs now and then. From what I have read, though, they stay in smaller family groups in spring/summer (when they would be breeding) and then collect into larger groups to get through the winter (they would not be breeding then). Again, though - dunno

I totally disagree with this statement! There are animals that will mate for life & humans who do NOT! Also there are many examples of humans "inbreed" with their children!
Please don't put humans so high in the pedestal. There is a reason why we need prisons & the death penalty!

Let's keep this discussion going about gliders being monogamous, please and not go down the "human" road. thumb

Thank you.

I wish there would be an in depth study done on sugar gliders. Like they do on other species on animal planet or nat geo... That would be awesome to see what the dynamics of the sugar glider could be. Maybe in different family groups the females or males dictate the group. Any one have that kind of connection, to get the documentary made?

I agree, that would be fascinating to watch! I wonder why no one has taken the torch to do that sort of research and discovery yet. O.o'

i wonder if enough people contacted nat geo/discovery/animal planet about sugar gliders if it would get the ball moving? especially if they knew just how popular gliders are becoming.

If they did, I don't think they would do it because they are becoming such popular pets. They don't typically do that to encourage private ownership.

Oh yeah, I would totally love to see a National Geographic episode on wild gliders. Wouldn't that be great?

And yes, my understanding is that males move from colony to colony but I do not know that they do it on any kind of specific time rotation. That is why, in my opinion, you sometimes see what we consider "bonded pairs" start to squabble after a couple of years and sometimes these squabbles turn into downright fights and they have to be separated. I've seen that happen here with 1 pair needing to be separated, 1 quad needing to be separated, and now I have the remaining pair from the aforementioned quad and a neutered male housed with his adult daughter who are starting to squabble as well. Others I have had together for years with no issues at all.

Nancy, I believe the estimate is 150 feet? But I am not certain...
