Came home tonight from work, and dinner. Walked in grabbed a couple apples because thats what my gliders wake up to at night..

When I went to disburse the apple chunks to the 3 groups of gliders I have. I noticed that my youngest pair, Luke and Leah, were not bouncing around their cage as usual.

I get through with the normal snacking procedure and get to their smaller cage and Im hit with a putrid smell...

Luke comes to the top of cage and starts his little merry go round around the top of cage but Leah isnt moving.
I reach into the cage and her head is destroyed. Im at a complete loss as to what happened.. or why.

I know luke either did it... or tried to clean it up because he's got blood stained fur. They've never fought before, they've been together since atleast 8 weeks old. I got them as a pair.

I just want to know why this would have happened. What could have spurred it on???

Is she dead? Is he intact, not neutered?

It could be if he is not neutered, and they are old enough to mate, it started as mating, she was not receptive and ended in a tragic fight.

I am so very sorry this happened. I cannot imagine coming home to such a tragedy. Unfortunately, you may never know what caused this to happen.

Were they both approximately the same age or was he older? Even with the answer to that question, you will not know the answer.

So very sorry.

Four months sounds young to me for such a vicious fight especially if they have been together for some time with no problems.

Again, I am so very sorry for your loss.

Welcome to Glider Central.

So sorry for your loss :tant2:

I agree with Karen, and feel they were too young to be fighting. My guess would be she was sick. I rhink your second guess is correct and by instinct, he may have been trying to get rid of her, or drag her out of the pouch. Unfortunately, it is nature's way.

I would watch him for a few days, and make sure he's Ok.

He may also fall into depression.

Please keep us posted on how your little man is doing.

I agree with Karen and Dawn, he was trying to clean up his pouch, they do this in the wild as a dead glider would attract predators.

I'm so sorry for your loss. From what I read, I too believe it was likely that she was dead before being mangled, and he was trying to remove her from the pouch. I hope you can find some comfort in this likelihood, and that she was not viciously attacked by her cagemate, as well as not sufferd the mutilation.
