My glider room doesn't have the best window for sunlight during the day. I leave a lamp on that's not directly shining at them and it's not super bright. Is this ok or do they need real sun light?

Correct me if I'm wrong but they shouldn't be in direct sunlight, although they need to be able to see the outside to see what time it is. So yes your arrangement is fine and you can keep the light HTH

I'm not completely sure about this so someone else may answer you, but as far as I know gliders don't NEED sunlight like we do for vit D absorption and whatnot since they're nocturnal, but they do need it to decipher between night and day. So I think the best thing for them would be to be in a room with sunlight, but if that's not possible I think having a lamp on in the daylight hours will be okay. HTH!

actually, there is some controversy in the vet community about theneed for UVB wave s(which cancome from sun and moon light) for vitamin D absorbtion. the thing is that as far as veterinarians can tell, all animal, mamals and reptiles alike, need UVB lighting. The thing is that they do not know if sugar gliders get their UVB during the day while they are sleeping or at night through moon light. now, i do know that having it light in the room that the glider is in during the day is important because keeps their natural cycle of waking and sleeping balanced. If it were dark in there all the time, it would completely throw that off. what you have right now (the lamp) is fine for them to differenciate between daya nd night. If you are concerned about UVB and vitamin D absobtion, then a lamp will not emit the rays needed and you need to look into another source.

Being a nocturnal animal they don't NEED direct sunlight or anything. It makes sense to me that they and all other animals would need some UVB for Vitamin D metabolism. However, being naturally nocturnal animals, it seems like they probably have some adaptive mechanism to be able to metabolize it without as much light, since we know naturally they are not out in direct sunlight during the day. In fact, it'd hurt their sensitive eyes. They don't really have pupils that can constrict a bunch like ours, and direct sunlight would bother them. As long as some sun is getting in through your window I imagine that they will be fine. Like you were told above, they either need to have some natural light or you need to put them on a light/dark cycle with lamps, otherwise it messes up their sleep/wake cycle if light levels are the same all the time. HTH

They do need some sort of light to distinguish day and night.

They will get confused when they should wake up if they don't have some light...however, they shouldn't be in direct sunlight.
