wow, what a waste of time THAT was. ive never even heard him crabbing until today and he made a big stink at the vets office because they took him into a back room. the vet said she couldnt even look at him unless he was sedated but she gave me some eye drops and thought it looked like he had a growth on his chest. just looks swollen to me and it'll cost me a small fortune to have him neutered... ugh, puppies are much less high maintenance than this haha

Is your vet experienced in sugar gliders? I can hold my most difficult glider in one hand and clip nails, medicate or inspect with the other, without being bitten. My vet does almost as well as I do. ;-) It concerns me that she gave you eye drops without an exam or culture and that all she said about his chest was that it was a growth. She didn't want to biopsy it? I'm sorry, but your vet would worry me if she were mine.

Have you checked out the Glider vets link? Perhaps you can see a more knowledgeable vet close to you. Where are you located?

You've been given some excellent advice! Just take one day at a time and he will soon start to calm down and relax once he feels trusting towards you. As for his eye, I strongly suggest that you have it looked at by a vet ASAP....if he did injure it, he will need to be put on some antibiotics otherwise it will get worse. I was hoping to hear that your little fella would have had his eye looked at by now. I'm sorry that it has become worse. Here is a link to our Vet Database If you need help with locating a vet, please let us know. We will help in anyway that we can. It's vital that you have him looked at ASAP. What your describing sounds serious and if it is not treated he could possibly wind up loosing his eye.

My little shadow is VERY high strung and hard to handle by anyone other than myself and my hubby.... my vet still has NO problem at all holding him ,,, he screams and fails his little front legs,, makes me feel sooooo bad... but my vet easily got a good look at his chest scent gland.... makes me agree with everyone else,,, look and see if you can find a better vet,,, especially when considering the neutering as well,,,,, they are such tiny little things ...they deserve the very best BEST OF LUCK...

Linda already gave you the link to the vet database, but here's the link to the page specific to Phoenix. Call and ask them how they do their exams and make sure they do the fecal float/smear. I would call today and try to get him seen. I know it's costly, especially after the last vet, but I feel it's important to have him see ASAP. Make sure to take in the eye drops the other vet gave you so they know what's been given to him. http://www.glidercentral.net/links/pages...enix/index.html

My boy Clyde gets a swollen chest gland once in a while too, when he goes through his "must mark everything and everyone constantly" phases. The first time I saw it I got worried, but a day or two later it was gone. It came back a few weeks later and was gone again. Then I started noticing it only happens when he and Darcia are mating, or when their joeys first come out of pouch. Clyde has always been an excellent daddy (2 sets of twins, and two singles so far). During these times he has to mark everything, and constantly rubs his chest on anything he gets near. I think it's a territorial thing and he goes overboard with it when Darcia's in heat, or when they have new joeys. He just wants to be sure everything smells like him. His son Junior does the same thing, but he's only gone overboard a couple times that I know of, where his chest gland was irritated from it. Of course its still a good idea to have a knowledgeable vet look at him, but it sounds like his over-marking could be what is causing his gland to swell up.

They very first time a long time ago, that I took a suggies to a vet, he kin dof scruffed her like a cat, he was holding her in two fingers around like her neck sort of. Now this is the most passive suggie I have EVER seen, and she drew blood on him, and I wanted to smack him so hard. I praised her when we got in the car for biting him. I never went back to him. How do you scruff a suggie you know I mean seriously, blah, and he does exotics haha riiiiiight.

Now that all my children are older ( I had my own liter, literately) I am getting back into gliders again.

I hope you can afford to go to another vet, hon. She might have suggies of her own, but she obviously doesn't know what she's doing when it comes to handling them...

I would recommend getting a second vet’s opinion .. I definitely think he needs to been seen by a vet based on these pics … !! I have to go through two vets .. the first one I did not like at all and she was supposed to be the ‘expert’ in this area …

He doesn't look great in those pics...in fact, the second one with his chest gland REALLY concerns me...I have never seen anything like that...it almost looks open around his gland?!? If that was my glider I would be extremely worried, and I'd be getting him into an experienced vet ASAP. Definitely go to a 2nd vet with more experience. Glider-experienced vets can be hard to find, but save you money in the long run because you don't end up paying more money for medications, visits, and possibly surgeries you don't need. I enthusiastically recommend the burrito wrap for restraining gliders at the vets. I take their pouch or a piece of fleece and just hold them in that like a little burrito, and try to keep my fingers away from their business end (the end with the teeth), and while I hold them the vet pulls this out and that out and looks at whatever is necessary. It keeps the biting to a minimum. Sometimes I'll give them a mealie to munch on too so they're less upset. Usually you have to hold pretty firmly, but be careful you aren't squishing them Hope this helps.

im in arizona...oh, he looks awful doesnt he? he never seemed to look to terrible when i took him out (probably because im new) but the more i look at all the pictures of your healthy little gliders, the worse he looks to me. as for his gland looking open, its not..just very swollen with some dirty looking buildup around it.

I didn't even notice the cage until you said something about it dranger1108...I wonder if that does have something to do with it. Don't beat yourself up mlwoo103, you said it yourself, you're new & didn't realize anything was wrong. Once you got here and realized things were bad you started looking for help. Getting that little guy to the vet is sooooooo important!! The one worst thing about a sick glider is they hide their illness as long as possible, so once we start seeing it a vet visit is imperative. ANYBODY in Arizona have a vet reference?? The vet seen previously apparently isn't very knowledgeable... Please keep us posted.

I noticed in the pictures the cage is not coated. Could that be agravaiting the scent glands? thanks everyone. but no, the cage is coated. it's just coated in silver so it looks like its not

back from another vet trip. thanks to the two of you that recommended valley west veterinary clinic. they were very knowledgeable. from what it seems, his problems are due to his previous poor diet. i got some meds. haha if he had it his way he'd take the whole bottle. he loves the cherry flavor. ive been feeding him a base pellet mix with mealies and vitamin sprinkled fruits and veggies, but she told me i really ought to get him on a strict diet. she recommended bml or the diet on thepetglider.com. what do you guys recommend i use?

Aww! The poor little guy. Glad you took him to the vets. :3 Ya, I'd strongly reccomend getting a new cage. That thing looks TINY to begin with. I use the HPW diet here but, take a look at some of the proven diets here and pick one that works for you. Personally, I like the Pet Glider, BML, and HPW diets the most.
