awwwwwwww...thank you! and Nippy sends love to Sugar and Nibbles!

Yes, we did Pom off~yes, that's what that picture was. I left all decisions up to Dr. Tristan. He's been doing this literally for YEARS, & not yet (knock on wood) had any SMers. He ties off the blood vessels, then snips off the pom, then pushes the sutured blood vessels back inside and adds a few drops of glue. Nippy was literally up and around in minutes.

There are a lot of horror stories out there about Neuters gone wrong, & my heart truly breaks for those who have had to go through that; but like Lynsie posted just recently, you always hear about the bad ones and rarely the good ones. I'm blessed to be able to post the pics and enlighten others to the step by step...had it not been for Peggy, I'd STILL be saying "I really need to get Nippy fixed..." With that said...DO keep researching vets...any vet worth going to will understand your desire to learn, and open their practice up to your questions!

I got Lan & Tas (father and son) neutered at the same time - poms off & Tas was great - no problems, healed fast, back with his fam - Lan (who had a history of SM) was a different story. So at the exact same time, I had one wonderful neuter and one horrible one - I was kinda lucky in that respect - I KNOW that neuters can be no problem...and I wouldn't be afraid to do it again. laugh

Oh yeah - he's just fine. Almost a month in an e-collar, away from his family and then he was fine - and that was almost a year ago now. laugh

Sorry Peggy, I was surfing...(bad Glider Mama!) He's doing well, though I think he is lonely. He's managed to get the glue off his surgical site, but it doesn't look like he's going after it; because it's an obvious "wound", I don't want to put him in with Naoshi just yet, because I'm almost certain SHE will go after it.

Suggestions?

Boy2...he didn't like the hospital cage though, so now he's back in the Rept, and Nippy's running around the apartment!

I can tell he's chewed the glue off, but trying to get a look...a REAL look...is nearly impossible. He TOTALLY lives up to his name, and is not one for being pinned down. I keep listening for strange noises, and getting up to check on him. I'd put him back in the Rept, but I KNOW Naoshi will open him up so fast. It's very frustrating because I know he's missing his family. I thought about putting the hospital cage inside the Rept, but I'm not so sure that's a good idea either...

I'm just curious about Dr. Tristan doing "Pom OFF" neuters when there is so much debate that leaving them on prevents SM. Can any of his patients enlighten me? I had told my vet that neuters should keep the Pom but it looks like we need to reconsider....

I have always heard just the opposite. That the gliders that have them left on are more apt to SM than those with them off...

You may also want to contact Bourbon about this as she can go more in detail about the whole pom off.

Dr.Tristan has always done his neuters pom off and Hip can even tell you, as he told her, all his years of doing neuters, he has never had a SMer thank God. All leaving the pom on is doing is leaving a piece of unneeded skin.

Dr. T *tucks* the sutures inside the pocket so they are not bothersome to the gliders. He did two the day we were there. One on Nippy, Hip's glider and one on one of my joeys that went to their new home. Both were successful. thumb

Nippy is doing FABULOUS, thank you everyone for asking. Dr. Tristan is absolutely AMAZING! He did assure me that in all his years of Glider Neutering he has never had an SM (thankfully, and I SURE didn't want to be the first!) It is my understanding he will be at the SGGA, giving a talk on Neutering, and I'm sure will be able to answer all of your questions there.

Truly...I was scared to DEATH to have Nippy neutered...he's older (7 years old); been traumatized so much, (his first home had him in a plastic cage that their dachsund chewed trough and his cage mate and joey were eaten, leaving him the sole survivor; A couple years back he had an abcess that Naoshi decided to remove herself...leaving a HUGE hole in his neck that had to be carved away at and the sutured up...27 stitches in his little glider body)...so exposing him to a potential SM situation was not a decision I entered into lightly. I talked this over with Peggy for quite some time, and she expressed to me what a gentle and knowledgeable vet Doc Tristan is, and once I stepped into his office I knew I had made the right decision. He was just as attentive to me as he was my Glider, took his time explaining to me everything that he was doing, and was most patient with me. He always does Pom off, tucks the sutures way down in there and adds a little glue...it's worked for him for years, I can attest to the fact that it worked for me, and would strongly recommend Dr. Tristan to ANYone needing to get gliders neutered.
