Lulu got out of her cage last Friday. We could not find her. This evening we found her. She had crawled up inside the back of the washing machine and was electrocuted when she touched live contacts on the machine. She touched the hot terminal for the water valve with her back leg and touched the ground on the bracket for the water valve with her nose and front paws. We will now keep the washing machine unplugged when not in use. Merlin

Merlin, I feel so badly for your loss. cry I have a washer & dryer in the gliders' room, but my paranoia stems from keeping both doors closed while the gliders are out OR not letting the gliders out while I'm using either one. (one of those lessons I've learned the HARD way, indeed!)

Guess I'll have another one now..... frown

The washer door was not open. She climbed inside the back of the machine, probably at the bottom, and climbed up to the wiring at the inside top. The machine was plugged in, (as it always was) and she grabbed hold of a live wire. We now unplug it when we are not using it. When we figured out where she was, by the smell, we pulled the machine away from the wall and removed the back of the washer. When I pulled her out she was still warm so I think current was still passing through her body. She disappeared Friday evening and we found her Sunday evening.

I never, never would have thought of that as a hazard.. I wonder if refridgerators and ovens have the same danger? ..How do you unplug a fridge? frown

Merlin, I am so very, very sorry for your lost. It saddens me deeply to hear of a glider's death. By sharing this with everyone, you will undoubtedly prevent countless other tragedies in the homes of loving owners.

Bless you.

Refrigerators, some electric dryers, and ovens have terminal blocks where the wires are recessed and partially hidden. That makes it hard to get ahold of the connector. Merlin

I am so sorry to hear of your loss, but I am so glad you posted it. Right now I have no tent so I've been letting my suggies run around in my bathroom, which just happens to be where my washer and dryer are. I block the back so they can't get behind it and I thought it was too close to the floor for them to go under, but I'm not going to take anymore chances. Thanks again for telling everyone, especially this one.

Always,
Andi
