My little princess is sick cry I brought Lidia home about a week ago and all seemed fine with her except this weird bald spot on her belly. She was eating great and acting perfectly normal. Last night I checked on her and she looked to have some swelling around her cloaca and she looked wet/ungroomed. I continued to watch her and noticed that she was grooming the area a lot and hissing. I stayed up all night keeping an eye on her to make sure she didn't SM. I wasn't sure what could have been wrong but I knew it was something. As soon as the vet opened this morning I rushed her in. She had diarhea right away and I had it rushed in for a fecal. The fecal showed that she had parasites. Forgive for not knowing what the classification is called, it started with an A and she said it was in the same family as hookworms and coccdia, so not good. I asked her to tell me exactly what it was, but she said it was just a class not an exact parasite. . .something like that. So I have her on two different meds in hopes that it clears up. She goes back on Monday for a checkup and on Wednesday I have a home visit and my vet will be checking on her then too. I feel so bad for my baby, you can just tell she is miserable. I had to seperate her from her mate Tokyo and completely sanitize everything today. My vet said that Tokyo should be in the clear since they have only been together for a week because this parasite takes longer than that to pass on, but I will be watching him closely. Please pray that my baby girl makes it through this with a quick recovery.

i am so sorry that you both are going thru this.
but, i would get tokyo into the vet, also. you have no idea as to how long she's been sick. they hide it real well, until they can't anymore, because in the wild, the sick ones are killed. so, he may be sick also.
please do make sure that they are getting more stuff to drink because they can dehydrate real fast.
just sit back, relax, & close your eyes, & empty your thoughts,& BREATH. breath from deep within, so this way you can get calm. one of the most loving persons i have delt w/here, told me to do that, so i am telling you too, also.
i know you have got to be [censored] out, as i was, but if you stay that way, your babies will know that, & the healing time will drag longer.
she could loose some weight, to, on the meds, some do.
i know you will do a good job, you're already proving it now.

Thanks guys!

Josefine, I assure you that I am doing everything as instructed by my vet. I do have experience with gliders and know how well they can hide an illness. Tokyo has only been with Lidia for one week, I know that for a fact and my vet said that should not have been enough time for him to get anything from her, BUT he is on close watch and my vet will see him on Monday and on Wednesday along with Lidia. I am upset that my baby is sick but I am not [censored] out, right now I just need well wishes for my baby.

Good news though. Seems like the meds are starting to take affect already. Lidia is looking a lot better and she had a solid stool just a bit ago.

Aww Lynsie, I'm sorry to hear Lidia is sick frown I've dealt with parasitic infections before and it's not fun... I'm curious what meds your vet gave you to treat her. If you want to discuss meds and treatments, give me a call smile 419-615-5631

Lidia didn't eat anything last night confused I have her meds to her along with a little pedialyte this morning and I will be going to get some ensure after work. I weighed her and she hasn't lost any weight yet, so that's a releif. I just wish she would eat, it would make me feel so much better.

so sorry your baby is sick. I hope she will be okay. I want to stress for any newbies reading this that this is a reason why we alway stress to quarantine. Some illness takes a while to show up.

I got her to take about 1cc of ensure but she still has diarhea. The vet said the diarhea is actually good though because it means that her body is trying to push the parasites out.

She's still doing just okay. I got her to take 2 more cc's of ensure and I gave her a bath because she was really nasty and it made her perk up a lot. She's out in the cage now but doesn't seem interested in her food. She's still hissing when she poops and seems to be very tender down there.

Little bit of an improvement, Lidia was drinking out of her water bottle tonight. It doesn't seem like much but I didn't think she was eating or drinking anything so I was really excited to see her drinking out of it. Now I at least know that she's getting ensure and water/pediatlyte.

I just got off the phone with my vet and this is the info I got:

Most common parasite- strongyle- similar to the roundworm/hookworm family.

pre-patent period- I asked her about how long it would take for another glider to get it and she said about a month before it could show up. So, if everyone should get thier gliders tested again in about a month.

She said that it can not be transmitted to humans or other animals, it's usually per that species. It's contracted through the eggs in the feces of the gliders.

Hope that helps everyone.

Thanks for the update, Lynsie. I'm so glad to hear that she is doing better!

Thanks again for pointing out the importance of the second vet check after the 30 day quarantine!

Give Lidia one of her favorite treats for me when she feels better!

She didn't eat anything solid but she did eat all her HPW so that is good. She is looking a bit better today also. My vet will see her again tomorrow.

Well it's been a rollercoaster so far. Up and down, up and down. When Lidia finished her meds and still 100% we started her on another round of meds, different round this time. After 2 days on the new meds she was looking worse. She had diarhea again and it was pretty bad. So we took her off of that and put her back on the smz tmp. She's been on that for 3 days now and is now showing a lot of improvement. For the past almost 2 weeks her belly has been soaked and today just a little part of it is wet looking and he poops are getting thicker by the day. Hopefully we will reach the top of this rollercoaster pretty soon and hopefully we can stay there. Here are a few pics that I snapped of her just a little bit ago:

I had another fecal run on her last Fri and I am waiting for the results. My vet should be calling me with them today.

I couldn't find where the original post was so I'm not up to speed on what happened, but maybe the yeast infection is from antibiotics? would non-fat yogurt with live cultures be ok to give her?

As I said in my other post, Lidia has been diagnosed with a yeast infection. Right now she is on a topical ointment but the problem with that is Lidia will lick it off. My vet is doing some research on oral meds and wanted to know if anyone else had ever treated a sugar glider with oral meds before?

My Bittah had a yeast infection when she first started breeding four years ago. Dr. West did treat it with an oral medication... but I don't have the information on which medication she prescribed. However, if you want to have your vet call Dr. West to discuss it with her, her number is 216-321-6040. I'll search through my receipts and see if I can find the information for you...

ETA: I searched high & low and couldn't find my 2004 vet receipts frown Sorry... Hopefully Dr. West will know what she prescribed although she has changed practices and doesn't have those records anymore.

Lynsie, when Grace had her yeast infection, the vet put her on Amoxicillian. I thought that was odd since it can cause yeast infections in humans...but it worked. dunno We didn't use anything oral on the pouch itself.

Lynsie, I am so sorry about Lidia. At least you now know what she has, so it can be treated. Would an e-collar help to give the ointment a chance to work until your vet finds an oral med? Sending wishes for a speedy recovery for your little girl!

Lynsie, I'm not sure if it's applicable for animals, but for humans the treatment for yeast infections would be Flagyl.

My suggestion is to have the vet culture the little girl's pouch. The results will give a list of meds that the yeast is sensitive to.

Also, your vet could do a phone consultation with Dr. Teresa Bradley DVM in Belton, MO.

She did swab the pouch but all the medications that came up were topical's. She has an oral she wants to try but since Lidia's immune system is weakend, she is so tiny (40g), and she's been on medication for almost 2 weeks now we want to make sure it's not going to be too hard on her liver first. She also wants to make sure that it's okay for a sugar glider.

Lynsie.. have your vet call Dr. Bradley.

I really am sorry you little one is really having a difficult time.

I do know my vet told me when applying ointments to a glider to hold the glider for ten minutes or so once it is applied so it can be absorbed into the skin as the glider will lick it off immediately.

At this point I can't really say for sure if Lidia is getting better or what. She isn't getting worse though. She did eat some of her corn and peas last night, seems to be the only solid thing she will eat. Before I could kinda tell if she was getting better by how wet her tummy looked but since I am now putting ointment on her tummy, I really can't tell. Only time will tell right now.

Hopefully it will just get better with time. I made another appointment for her on Monday for the vet so we can do another swab and see if the topical is helping the yeast infection or if we need to try the oral meds. I am really hoping that the topical is doing the job. I can't wait for her to get better so she can go back in with Tokyo.

UPDATE: Just got home from the vet. Lidia's yeast infection is 75% better than last week but not completely. I am to keep her on the topical until the oral meds come in. Hopefully they will be in, in a day or two. I am also going to be putting collaste spray on that weird spot on her belly because it looks like she has been overgrooming it, so hopefully she'll leave it alone with that nasty spray on it. We have also started her on Clavamox because she is still hissing when she goes potty and she reaked of urine today but she couldn't get a good urine sample, so we are putting her on the clavamox in case she has UTI. Also, that strain of meds is the only thing we haven't tried so far. She seems to be improving but not like she should be. It just seems like one problem covering another. Good news though! vet said that I could put her back in with Tokyo!! She said that all the parasites seem to be dying so they shouldn't be contagious anymore and he can't get the yeast infection from her so they should be okay.

She looked at the bee pollen today compared to the parasite eggs and she was not mistaken. She even let me look at them. They do look very similar except the eggs have one more ring around the edge of them and the bee pollen doesn't. She said that all the parasites/eggs she has been seeing have be dead or are shriveling up and dying. So, I also got the go ahead to set all the gliders cages back up.

I'm taking Lidia down to Dr. Tristan in TX in a few days. She hasn't gotten worse or anything, we are just concerned because she is not getting better like she should be. So she's going to stay with Auntie Peggy until she is feeling better.

Kinue, Lidia is here with me, she is doing really well. Tokyo is here also.

Lidia had some tests done and also some cultures sent out that we are waiting to get the results back from. She is currently on baytril and domeboro. Her stools are normal and although she still has a small *sore* area, the rest of her belly is all cleared up. She is also gaining weight. wink

Current updates can usually be found over at LGG...we miss ya over there. smile

Peggy, what tests were run on Lidia so far? Have you gotten the results from those tests? What this poor little one has seems like such a mystery with the strange off/on symptoms etc.

Has Tristan an idea on it? Treatment?

Thanks for the updates! We're pulling for her full recovery!!! smile

They ran a blood panel, 4 different types of fecals and possible something else. They also did x-rays on her.

Tristan came to the conclusion that her system was so off from changing her meds. Some of the meds she was on would up the positive gram bacteria and some would up the negative gram bacteria. In the end she ended up with almost all negative gram bacteria and hardly any positive gram bacteria. Treatment was Baytril for 14 days.

She goes back in for her checkup on Tues and we will get the results from all the tests then.

Im surely not a vet, really just following along with treatments as this seemed like an interesting thing that was going on, parasites compounded with what seemed to be a strange yeast like infection... I at least had not seen anything like it here on the boards or in person.

I just hope she's fully recovered soon. I know this has been going on a long time and has probably been alot of stress for such a little girl. Im glad she's in such good hands. smile

Ok, just got off the phone with Lynsie...Now I can tell the rest of you the latest with Lidia. What a trooper she is...poor ole gal.

Lidia is clearing up nicely, She was indeed a sick little girl. You will see yourself in just a minute...She did have one area that just would not heal up, no matter what was done...

Tristan did a skin biopsy on this area. The skin around it was thicker than the rest of her skin.
He thinks all this could have something to do with a genetic problem and told me today he REALLY wished people would stop breeding for albino/creminos...It could take up to 3 weeks for the results to get back on the skin biopsy but he will call me as soon as it comes in. He also did another pouch culture just to make sure everything is all cleared up. Although she looked 95% better than the first time he seen her, he wants to b sure, everything is definitely gone.

Lidia got 3 stitches today where he removed the *sore*...she has not messed with them at all. So all keep your fingers crossed and prayers going out that tonight neither her nor Tokyo decide to mess with them. I have the ecollar ready though....just in case, but something tells me, Im not going to need it.

Ok now for the results... I will write it as it is on the paper...

Hang in there, Lynsie!

And, thank you, Peggy.

Got you some pics Lynsie. She is going to look a little wet because she felt the need to pee as the pics were being snapped!! :rolling eyes:

Neither of them crab anymore when you get the pouch out. And she isnt biting as much, but will still nibble on you. I think that is just who she is going to be....a skin biter. She is really doing so well now Lynise. I can not wait for you to see her again. Really. She is up to 51 grams, just weighed her a few minutes ago when I had her out for pics.

So here ya go....you tell me if you can see where her sutures are....Not one time did she or Tokyo try to mess with them and she the only pain meds she had was the ones that Tristan gave to her the day of the surgery. She didnt need them after that.

Make sure you go back and look at the before pics Lynsie....as you can see, She has fur back now!!! YIPPEE!!!!

Lidia's skin biopsy came back and the results are in....

Along with all the things we already knew, it showed a really long term for an obstruction under her skin...the obstruction is believed to have been....an ingrown hair. The reason for the ulceration of it is one, all the other funk that was going on and two, an infection had already started on the inside. When Tim cut the area out, not knowing at the time what it was, he cleared it up. He thinks this is more than likely the reason for her to leave it alone and it was not painful to her. So that area is healed.

However, he will be chatting with Lynsie at the SGR as he does believe Lidias Immune system is jeopardized, or not up to par so to speak. He also strongly believes this is a genetic issue. He has no way to *prove* it but has asked that we keep a close eye on the lines that are coming out and keeping record of every little thing that is discovered ie: cannibalized joeys, rejected joeys, sickly gliders, taking a long time to heal, on the small side, slow at weight gain, early deaths....and as he puts it, just basic common sense stuff...

Lidia also started hissing again while defecating. Her stools are normal and really there is no reason *why*, so we are just going to watch and see over the Christmas week what happens. If it continues he may want to run a dye barium on her to make sure she doesnt have a something another intestine....sorry dont remember what he called it, but it is where the intestine gets smaller in a certain area and sometimes it is harder for smaller animals to *push* their feces out...he said she is too small to do a scope on and he just refuses to do an abdominal surgery on her. Once again, he just thinks this is due to her being a cremino. His words, not mine.

But anyway, overall the report was GREAT!!! And Lidia has just about ALL of her fur Back!! She LOVES having her head rubbed, right behind her ears and her new love is giant mealies!! We had some celebration ones this evening.

YEAH LIDIA!!!
