When I posted pics of the PVC cage I made alot of people PM-ed me and requested a tutorial. Sooo...I did my best to make a simple one for you guys today. wink

http://justforfuzzies.com/Other_Stuff/Cage/index.html

I will be making another one soon and will take pics as I build it to make the tutorial alot easier to understand and more laid-out for those of you out there who are like me and have to have every single detail laid out before they can proceed with the next step. roflmao

I bought all of the needed supplies at Menards and it cost me a total of just $75(give or take a couple dollars) to build one cage. grin

As I build more cages I'm going to try new things, such as using nuts/bolts instead of zip-ties and also adding shelves. As I make any upgrades, I'll change the tutorial accordingly. wink

I hope this helps you guys! Sorry for it being without nice pics and is still rather complex, but I promise to do my best to make it as simple as possible and am also open to suggestions. smile

BTW, if you make one of the cages can you post/send me pics? I'd love to see them and would also like to make a photo section on my site so people can see how the cages turn out and you can post any adjustments you made as well. laugh

Oh yeah, for those that haven't seen the cage I made, here's a pic(doesn't have the handle/latches yet in the pic...)

If you guys have any questions, feel free to ask. wink

Sorry I haven't responded sooner, I've been pretty busy lately. tounge

I'm working on making a wooden platform for the bottom with two by fours. It will have just one plank of wood in the middle(for support), but the rest will be open and it will have wheels in the corners. That way the poo/food can fall through the bottom to a piece of fleece(or container?) below AND the cages will be easier to move. wink

Thanks to Catman for the awesome idea! grin

Jenny, if I remember, I'll take a pic of the bottle-holder I made. I just cut out a piece of fleece and made a no-sew holder for my bottom and the tied the holder to the corner of the cage. It was super easy!

Nicole, if you want to try out one of those washer trays, I have one here. I used it when I had my vinyl shelving cage... If you could build a cage that was just a wee bit smaller than the tray, the whole cage would sit inside of it and that would be very nice for cleaning. Also, I'll be UB can figure out a way to maybe make a PVC frame for the tray and then you can attach casters...

Nicole,

I'm getting ready to make four of these cages. I noticed that in the drawings you have a cross bar on the bottom running from side to side. However in your photo, the cage bottom has a cross bar from front to back. Which should it be?

Also, the cross bar on the bottom would add no strength to the cage itself, only the bottom piece that slides out. Did you add any cross bars from front to back or side to side anywhere through the cage for support?

Did you glue the fittings to the pipe?
Thank you!
Colleen

I don't have a pix but can take one. It is like about a 3' square and about 4-6 " deep. The rept frame sits right inside of it. Picture your washer sitting in a white plastic cake pan.roflmao

I'm sure Menards, Lowes & Home Depot will know what you mean. It is just a tray that the washer sits in. Menards has them in the plumbing dept. here.

gliderma,
Yes if you could take a picture and measure it I would really appreciate it as I am thinking about tracking down on for under my cage. So need to see a pic and size to make sure it works as well as to explain it to the store what i am after.

Whoops, that's just me being air-headed, lol. I'll need to change the drawing. tounge

The cage is really stury, it doesn't need any support, trust me, lol. wink

Thank you for the clarification!

Do you glue the pieces together or just press fit?

You can also get the landware cloth at Lowe's, Home Depot, or Ace. I ordered a super heavy duty one that is much smoother on the feet at www.industrialnetting.com
But of course it costs more too.

I don't glue the pieces, I just press them together, that way I can take the cage apart in the future if I ever need to.

Whoops! Sorry, yeah, I've got lots of pics, lol. I haven't put the hardware cloth on, but I went ahead and assembled the cage and drilled all the holes and such just to make sure I did everything correctly.

I think there's a pic-limit, so let me try and go through and get just the most important ones to show you guys...

Okay, here are some pics... Let me know if I forgot to post pics of anything you guys specifically wanted to see.

*click pics to enlarge them*

Full view

Hook and Eye Latches(I tried the spring-loaded ones and they were WAY too difficult to use, so I switched to 1 1/2" hook and eye latches that I got at Walmart)

Bottom Food Door

I used bolts and nuts to do the "hinges"

I used the same nut/bolt concept for the bigger doors as well, except for the bottom nut/bolt I had to add 2 washers on one of the doors to boost it up a little

Rather then using large zip-ties to hold the cage panels together I used nuts/bolts/washers instead

Sooo...with the new cage I made it bigger, used nuts' bolts to hold it together, used simple hook and eye latches for the doors, and made the hinges with nuts and bolts, so that the doors don't sage over time, like with regular hinges. wink

With this new design the doors will be better, the frame is a bit sturdier(although, at 6' tall, instead of 5', it's a little bit wobblier), and the cage will be just as easy to disassemble as a store-bought cage! grin

Hopefully the pics are helpful!

Once I get the landware cloth on the cage I'll be changing the tutorial to add pics. I'll also be adding the new measurements for a 6' cage in case anyone wants that size as well. Feel free to ask if you would like the measurements for a different-sized cage!

Oh yeah, and I also made the top and bottom with crossbars going both ways. It'll add additional support to the bottom and extra support for hanging things from the top as well(you can hand toys directly from the cloth or put eyes in the PVC for hanging stuff from. Either way, it should hold up much better then the original design.

I made the cage frame!
there are 2 differences right now

1- It is 2 pieces not 6 its the main body and the pull out bottom!
2-all walls have a 4 way connector instead of just the front

sorry these were taken on my phone

I'll still be making little tweaks and adding/changing pics, but, for the most part, the new tutorial is all done! grin

http://justforfuzzies.com/Other_Stuff/Cage/index.html

I'll be adding how to make a wheeled-platform and shelves as well, once I can get some made. tounge And, of course, additional sizes will also be added as I convert the measurements and get them all drawn up on Paint. I plan on adding 2'x3'x3' and a 2'x3'x4' cage measurements in the near future. If you would like different measurements, feel free to PM me and I'll try and get them done what I can. wink

Don't forget to post pics of the cages once you get them built! smile

Oh yeah, here are pics of the "new and improved" cage. I'm almost done putting the mesh on it(I'm 1' short because I used some of the mesh for a different project, lol) so hopefully I'll have final pics in a day or 2). wink

Hi!

I just thought that I would add that I did finish the cage and that it is great quality. They have been in it since Tuesday and have not escaped. All I must say is, please, please, please check the cage to make sure they can't escape everyone! For me, I had to add a bit to the front right and front left corners. Plus the doors might end up with too big of a gap, so they can also escape their. This is with any home made cage! This cage is amazing, but just be careful! Thank you SO much Guerita135, I really appreciate this tutorial. (Also, for those who are wondering, the total cost was around $80 for me.)

took me about 3 hours with pvc but if you do it more than 1 it should only take maybe and hour and then took me forever to put on the mesh!

ALL DONE!

Sorry it took me so long, I've been keeping busy lately and the cage got put on the back burner, but it's all done now and I'll be updated the pics on my site when I get a chance. wink

Of course, I decided to have a little fun and make some toys too, so I'm posting pics of those as well cause I'm so proud that they're cute and coordinating. grin lol

The completed cage

After I added a shelf and some toys

Reset foraging ball pit(without the balls yet, lol)

Baby rings and a giant egg(still needs the blankies)

Bridge with swinging "steps"

On the bottom I also added a froggie treat dish(actually, I think it's a floating soap holder for kids to use in the tub, lol) and the little baby frogs

I love this cage plan!

Question for those who have made it:

Since the hardware cloth is on the inside of the frame instead of the outside, has anyone had problems with Suggies getting stuck between pieces or scratched from the edges?

It certainly looks like you would have less chance of escape with the hardware cloth on the inside.

Sgarmoon65- I haven't had any problems with the gliders messing with the mesh and I highly doubt they ever will. I've never heard of anyone having problems with the mesh either. In fact, many wheels are made with the mesh as well.

I also take extra precautions to cut the edges of the mesh nice and smoothly and also trim the corners so there are no sharp areas the gliders will hurt themselves. wink

Here's a pic of how I put the mesh on:

As you can see, there's nothing sharp. wink

Hubby was supposed to cut the wood for my wheeled platform and I was going to take more pics of the cage after that, but the battery on his saw is too old and it won't power the saw enough to cut the wood. Hmph! So, I've either got to cut it by hand or we need to buy another saw...

I'll have to take new pics of the cage now that it's got all the fancy stuff(and gliders!) in it. wink Of course, at the rate I'm going, I probably won't get ANYTHING done til after the SGGA. I've got more cages to build, a zillion and one joeys to take pics of(and more on the way! Yikes!), bedding to make, a vet check to get done(for the USDA paperwork), a joey that is sick, but can't figure out why....the list goes on. Phew!

I WILL get more pics though, lol. Ya'll will just have to be VERY patient with me. tounge

I started this project yesterday and I thought it would be easy and a slam dunk. No way! I am on day 2 and I still have to spend another day to finish the front and the bottom.

I encountered some problems because the cross connectors werent available in my area so I had to get a bigger size and change accordingly. I am not sure if that is what made the doors a little smaller so I've had to get clever on that challenge too. If anything, my only suggestion is waiting until you have the rest of the cage done before cutting off the doors. You may have a personal preference to making it bigger and it would be at that time that you can make the necessary changes.

So far, it looks good but not exactly like the pictures in the tutorial. Its very stable though and I added a couple more bolts to it. I will post pictures when I am done...

How many gliders can be safely and comfortably kept in the 5' tall x 3' wide x 2' deep? What about the 6' tall x 3' wide x 2' deep?

I went to get my supplies today. Is the cost $75-$80 for everything? I spent that and didn't even get the nuts, bolts and washers. Stainless is really expensive. Are there other options? My dad wants to know about glueing the joints also. Is it safe to do that instead?

You can use plumbing glue but make sure that it cures for atleast a week to make sure there are not residual fumes. And do this outside as the plumbing glue is very potent. Once dry/cured, it is safe (it's what is used in our own water lines).

For the most part though, you don't need to glue or screw the pvc joints. (except for the wheel stand) The pipes and connectors fit very snug.

I made a pvc cage for my babies but it is only 36"x32"x21" as I live in an apartment. And I saved money by not using the bolts and only used zipties and I did different doors. But it is super sturdy and I love it. And I had the entire thing put together in about 4 hours. And spent $70 less than I was going to spend for the sturdy Suncoast cage and it is the same size.
