Ah I just saw this pop up! I didn't even know this thread WAS still going
So I started this thread with Shadow, but his mates were a handful as well, Sugar was the tamest of all of them. Sunshine came around very nicely with Bourbon's help. And without her help I would never be able to share this picture!~Sunshine with her first joey just about to come OOP! She sat so nice in my hand and let me take a few pictures! She is a little doll now. I never expected her to become so tame!
*whew* Well I just spent a good amount of my day reading all 4 parts of this (who needs to write papers anyway??)
I'm thinking that Ozzie may possibly be pouch protective. He's extremely crabby if I dare go in his cage, and lunges if I go near his pouch.. but for playtime he climbs all over me. Still not quite sure about me yet as I've only had him a little over a month but nowhere near as evil as in the cage. I want to order the pouch protective pouch, but I'm worried about starting it right away because he's scheduled to get neutered in 2 weeks. Not to mention I'm nervous about doing it in general. What if he hates me more?? lol

I go in his cage to feed him, and get him out for bonding time. His sleeping pouch is his bonding pouch right now so I don't have to chase him around or anything. I never chase him around the cage or when he's out for playtime. He spends time out in his bonding pouch with me for about an hour or two every other day, and he crabs most of the time.
Every time I go into his cage he gets a licky treat. He crabs like crazy and lunges when he sees my finger until he tastes the yogurt/honey/whatever I've got.
*sigh* He might just be getting used to his surroundings. Both of my boys are rescues, but this particular one came from a pet store so it may be just taking him longer.

Great job Sharona! Just remember, do NOT let the licky treat run dry! Offer a bit, then take it away and dip your finger again. That will get him used to your hand coming at him a lot faster, PLUS, gliders are sap suckers. In the wild, when the sap runs out, it is their natural instinct to crunch down to get the "sap" flowing again. You don't want that happening to your finger. LOL
If he is having issues in a pouch, you may want to try using a larger pouch, and folding down the top so he can see his surroundings. Truly pouch protective gliders do a lot better when they can see what it going on around them, this helped my Donna a LOT!
GOOD LUCK!

Thanks! He has a bonding pouch as his regular cage pouch right now, and it has a window on the front that he can see out of, but maybe a bigger pouch with the top folded down would work.

Ok so after an awesome convo with Bourbon last night, she definitely helped me put things into perspective with my little guy. She had me take out his pouch and his wheel, and use his hammock as a makeshift (PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets. He looked a little confused, and was seriously PO'd about leaving his pouch. He's sleeping in his hammock right now, and when I went to check on him this morning, he crabbed at first but nowhere near the "screaming" crab I get normally. Now I'm supposed to be watching what makes him crabby, and learn his body language. This will be fun!

Hello everyone! It's been a LONG time... But thought I'd check in.
Since my last post... Emma and Pae have been doing wonderfully! My boy Lenny is a wonderful glider, the sweetest of them all! Even Pae who's a snuggle bug (but she's timid, Lenny is just plain SWEET!).
But Emma now has one glider in pouch and Pae has two! I'm going to be busy busy busy soon.
My hubby bought me a sewing machine, I don't sew well but I can now sew! So... I decided to start making pouches because I wanted a variety of pouch protective pouches, Emma will never transition back... every time I try to take a step with her, she says to me "No way!" but that's ok, she's happy in her open pouch and that's perfect!
So... I decided to make a more closed in back, open in front and top pouch, so far so good... It's a hybrid of a traditional cage pouch and a pouch protective pouch (which I've also made)
Anyways... wanted to know if there was anyone interested in looking at it... considering selling them on Suggie-Bay but not sure if there is a market at all!
PS. I discovered that a flannel sheet doesn't work great as a cage cover. My little mischievous devils pulled the flannel through the bars and started making pouches out of it. It's hilarious but stresses Emma out... so no good. But that was my inspiration behind the closed in back pouch, I wanted them to get more of the "hole in a tree" feel.

I don't think my gliders would do well with something like that, but it's worth putting a couple up on critterbin or something just to see if they sell. Glad to hear your gliders are doing well, congrats on the babies in pouch!

I have Rowdy and Ruckus... 8 week and 3 day OOP little boys that, up until 3 days ago had hardly EVER crabbed. That is, until they left Mom and Dad and came to live at Auntie Robin's house. After leaving the parents, one of these sweet little boys became VERY distraught and crabbed non-stop for 2 days pretty much. I have been around these babies since their Momma was a baby, so they KNOW me! Right now, little Rowdy is terrified if you breathe in the direction of his cage. Tonight, when offering a licky treat to him in his current hiding place... I was struck at and bitten... HARD!
I know I know I know... it is normal to crab... BUT... I am telling you, I have known this little guy his entire LIFE, and he is scared to death! SO guess what just happened???
I dusted off the pouch protective pouch and installed it in their cage! We shall see what happens...
I am starting Mr. Rowdy with no talk, no touch, no eye contact. He is THAT scared! Right now he needs to re-learn that I can approach his cage and NOT eat him up! That is for tonight... tomorrow I will start offering licky treats as often as I can, probably up to 8 times a day, but NOT taking him out of the cage or approaching him when he is OUT of that pouch.
I'll update at least once daily...

I think they are just freaked out being away from mom the first time. I am sure they just need some time to settle in and they will be back to their sweet little sugar selves. Can you get a pouch that smells like mom? That would be most comfortable and familiar for them. I would give them some space for a few days to settle in.
The PP pouch may help, but it may also scare them more to have no place to hide you know?
That is why I always provide a pouch (that has been used by the family) with my joeys. There have been 2 times the buyer did not want the pouch. The first slept in her food bowl the first night.
The second person took home just a blankie that had been with the family, and his new owner told me little Gilbert would carry that blankie around everywhere with him at first! I felt sad he did not have a (familiar) pouch and missed mommy, but the picture of him dragging his blankie I get in my head makes me laugh, it seems so, well, human lol.
