I came back from a week long trip for my sisters wedding to find Apple with a mating wound. I seperated her from Adam and put her in another cage. Called my vet and he said to call him back in the morning. The next morning I called and described the wound to him and he said that neosporing should be all that's needed. Ok. Now that she's been away from Adam the wound isn't getting groomed. So it looks worse to me. No swelling or oozing though. Is there a way I could clean it and apply neosporin? And are vets the only ones that carry Quick Derm Ointment? I was confident with my vet. He has done several nueters for me and is knowledgable. Now I'm not sure she shouldn't be seen.

I feel terrible about this. I don't like leaving my home at all really. My sister's wedding was a situation I couldn't avoid, being that I was the Matron of Honor. Because of the location of the wound my husband didn't notice it, and neither did the sitter. I'm just sick. I want to help her heal as quickly as possible.

How large and deep is the wound? Those the size of a pencil eraser can usually be cleaned with sterile water, ointment applied and will heal well. Larger or any that look infected will need to be treated by a vet. So maybe your vet does not understand what the wound looks like.

If it is a breeding wound on the back of her neck she will not be able to groom it, and you don't want to put them back together, he may overgroom or not be done with the urge to mate and open it further.

It is impossible to say on the computer what needs to be done. If you really feel uncomfortable about it, call your vet back, tell him you might be over reacting but you feel like it should be looked at. I am sure they will see you if you impress on him how worried you are.

I'll post a picture to show it better. But, yes it is about pencil eraser size. I was reading on the SweetSpot site. Is scabbing a bad thing, or should I let it scab over? I'm confused. Any thoughts about Quick Derm, anyone?

And thanks queenduck!

Here's a picture for all to see. I think I'll take another after I clean the wound as well.

They will scab over and that is normal. You need to watch it to make sure it doesn't get oozy (infected) under the scab.

Signs of infection are oozing, bad odor, redness, swelling, hot to the touch. If there are any signs of any of these, then a vet visit is needed. Oral antibiotics can be given to help prevent infection. You should discuss this with your vet.

The wound itself isn't a huge concern but infection is. The wound will heal providing it doesn't become infected. Keep it clean and keep the neosporin on it. DO NOT USE peroxide on it. Peroxide will bubble away the new healthy tissue and slow the healing.

You will need to keep her seperated until it completely heals. They can have supervised visits in the mean time but don't let him groom at her wound.

I have a syringe, sterile water ready to clean wound. I had to order Quick Derm, noone has it around here. Post new pictures later this evening, hopefully of a cleaner wound.

How long does it normally take for these wounds to heal completely? With the fur growing back and all?

Breathing a little easier for the moment. Apple is doing well. I took more pictures, for myself mostly. It tells me how the wound is healing. I can't believe how much smaller it looks already! I recieved the QuickDerm today. I have been cleansing the wound at least once daily. Below are pictures from today.

Last night I had tent time with Adam and Apple. They were both getting so depressed. They were so excited to see each other! It was funny to see Apple use her little paw to swat him away from her neck. I only had to distract him twice to keep him from her wound. I'll definitely be doing tent time as much as possible for them. Both their spirits were lifted afterward.

It could take 2-4 months. It's looking really good! I'm glad you were able to do tent time with them. It sounds like they really needed it!

Ok people! Quick Derm ointment is the best stuff ever! I've been using it for a week now and I can't believe the healing time! And the color difference in the flesh. It looks so much healthier! If you look at the above pic, the flesh is sort of yellowed looking. There wasn't any oozing, just an odd color. Here's the latest pic, everything is much pinker.

Apple spent her first night back in with Adam! No problems as of yet. Her wound has healed and she has peach fuzz covering the area already. I still can't believe her progress.
