While you may think this should be in housing and accessories, it needs to be here.

I was contacted this evening by a glider owner who's glider got to some catnip. This cat toy did NOT list catnip on the package. But when the glider managed to get to the batting on the inside of the toy, there was catnip in it. We don't know if the glider actually injested any of the catnip or not but he is being treated as if he did.

PLEASE DO NOT USE CAT toys!!!!!!!! Some cat toys have catnip oils on them to attact the cats and this is just as lethal. Catnip WILL KILL GLIDERS.

Just don't risk it...there are other things that can be used for toys for your little gliders. Cat toys need to be avoided all together just to be on the safe side.

How is the glider being treated? (good to know just in case) Thank God the glider is okay!

Poison control was contacted (though they were not much help) and then one vet contacted another vet who suggested activated charcoal and to really push the fluids. At this point, that is all I know...

Fortunately, the glider's owner is a vet tech and was about to go to work when this was discovered and was able to take the glider in with her.

I just need to say a public Thank You to Teresa~Dancing. Thank you and it is appreciated more then you will ever know. Having GC people to drop what they are doing for our mistakes/stupidity is the best thing ever to have on speed computer!

So far Mr. Magoo is doing fine but he is not out of the woods for another day or so. He is acting normal so far. He did sleep more then normal last night but he was pretty ticked off when he was not sleeping as he chewed up the paper plate his food was on. I am to watch for abnormal signs, hyperactivity, and rapid heart rate. I gave him the activated charcoal and he ate it but disliked it. I also gave him water with a touch of applejuice in it to get him to drink lots. I gave it to him every hour with an eye dropper to make sure I knew he drank it. He got home this morning and ate pretty good. And he is pooping normal only it is black from the charcoal. I am looking though it to see if he ingested any of the stuffing from the toy. Now he is sleeping. I will wake him just to hear the crabs I get and deserve. They will be happy sounds today!
I learned from this mistake. Never trust the packaging as I did. I almost missed the fact that the nip was in there as he had just stared to pull it apart and I took it away. After a few minutes I decided to pull it all the way apart and down inside the middle of the stuffing was the nip. This toy did not have the scent of catnip when you smelled it on the outside but the scent was there when I took out the stuffing.

I also thought I had my bases covered in case of an emergency and who to call. Well, that went out the window fast. I called 6 vets ~ 2 here in CT, 2 in NY City, 1 in Mass and 1 in RI all do Exotic vet care. One is a University. They all had no-one on call to do exotic's. Then I got a number and one of the vets I work for was able to get us the information we needed to treat him.

I learned a valuable lesson here and he gets NO MORE CAT toys! I almost lost my best friend (other then my husband) As he knew he was about to have to make a long road trip to help my little guy out if needed. Hubby is a trooper.

Again Thank you all for your well wishes and Dancing you are the best! I will let everyone know how he does over the next couple of days.

Have a Good Day
Brenda &
Mr. Magoo

Glad to hear that Mr. Magoo is doing fine so far.

And this is a really good lesson for all of us. I've let my gliders play with cat toys before, but removed then when it was brought to my attention that ones that didn't list catnip still could possibly have catnip inside or the oil on it.

keep us updated on your baby

It is 2pm here and Mr. Magoo is doing fine so far. He is a little trooper and takes his oral fluids great. He is taking about 1cc at a time and this will help flush out any toxins he may have gotten. Thank you everyone.
Xglider I am feeling better emotionally but on the other hand I am still feeling like an idiot about giving it to him.I will kick myself but remember this forever.

Brenda, don't beat yourself up over this. You have learned and hopefully others will have learned also. I'm so glad Magoo is doing well. Perhaps he didn't get any of the toxins from the catnip but you did right in treating him as if he had. Better safe then sorry. You did and are doing a great job. You were alert enough to see the potential problem and acted quickly to get Magoo the help he needed. If he did get into the catnip, your quick actions probably saved his life. Again, GOOD JOB!

ugh, i'm so paranoid when it comes to catnip in toys. I only buy them when it's specifically labled "no catnip!" to avoid problems, and believe me, those toys are hard to find!

Good Morning Everyone ~ Well mom is finally relaxing a bit now as it seems Mr. Magoo will be fine. He had me a bit worried last night as he was sleeping way to late so I woke him up! He crabbed and went in his wheel to find a mealie or two. I think he was still tired from all his excitment of going to work with Mom to get yucky charcoal stuff! He ate well last night and is his regular old self.
Thank you again everyone for your help and concern. You are a great group of Glider Friends!

I always use the hard "mesh" balls with a jingle bell inside. The gliders love rolling them around on the bottom of the cage, and especially carrying them to the top of the cage and throwing them as hard as possible, just to hear the bell lol.
This way, I can just throw the toys into hot water along with all of their pouches at the end of the week on cage cleaning day.

I'm so glad Mr. Magoo came through this okay. I know exactly how you felt when he didn't wake up when you thought he should. My gliders were sick recently and you just analyze every little thing they do or don't do and say to yourself "do they usually do that?"

Give that little guy an extra mealie for me!

Thank you all for caring about everyones gliders! Just to let you all know Mr. Magoo is doing great. He too likes those toys with bells in them, the more noise they make the better. We will be making him a new spider toy but only with fleece and no additives! He got mealies and a few waxworms for being a good glider boy!
Thank you again
