I've read up on ridding a cage of fruit flies. I was wondering what you've tried that worked and tried but didn't work.

I have tried the glass of sweet juice/or wine covered with plastic wrap and holes or slits punched in it. The wine worked the juice did not. I used a cheap cheap cheap $3 of wine. The flies were gone in 3 days/ We had alot.

The drier sheets worked.. "ok" but the shot glass with red wine vinegar worked pretty well.

I use what is left from dinner one night, put it in a little cup, add a little soap and water to make a nice slushie and then cover it with the plastic wrap, sealed with a rubber band and then poke little holes with a toothpick......they get in and can't get out.....I replace that every other day.....it definitely works wonders!!!!

I've also heard of using a pop bottle. Has anyone tried this?

First - if you are having problems with fruit flies you need to get rid of all the places they can breed. It takes only about a week for them to lay eggs, go through the pupa stage and develop into flies.

Do not leave any food especially fruit or vegetable scraps in the glider cage. Remove all food in the morning and clean the pan daily.

Empty your trash daily if there are any fruit scraps, peels, etc. Banana peels are a fruit fly favorite.

Wash any trash cans that may have had fruit or juice spill under the plastic bag - the bottom of a sticky garbage can is a favorite fruit fly breeding place.

I'm curious. Is this a normal problem for many? So far (knock on wood), we have not had an issue with fruit flies. Hoping this continues...but is it something I should plan on??

I haven't had a problem with fruit fles yet either, but my grandmother has 6 gliders and she has had fruit flies from the start. We have tried everything. Nothing gets rid of them!

This is the first time for me. It's very disconcerting.

Great information Candy. Thanks so, so much.

The garbage can gets emptied twice a day and I always use Clorox wipes on it. I haven't seen any around there. My garbage disposal gets Cloroxed everyday. Sinks are scrubbed 4+ times a day. I'm making sure that food and liners in cages are changed every morning. Fruits and vegetables are kept in the refrigerator.

Where else should I be looking for breeding places Candy?

Sinks, I've been told to pour bleach down the sink....I'm having a gnat issue. Had one last year around summer time and got rid of them when I found I had left my kitchen composter in my pantry instead of putting it outside. Put my trash can in the garage for awhile and used the many grocery bags I had so trash went outside nightly.

I get them this time every year and I am diligent in taking all the precautions which never works....I just view it as my sign that summer has arrived and know that it will be over in 3 months....

It sucks I can't use chemicals or stuff with DEET, but with a pregnant glider who has a pouch so large I won't see those babies until they are 8 weeks lol and other animals, I don't want to risk it.

Just a quick question for y'all that are having trouble with flies and gnats. Do you have plants anywhere in your house? They can also be a BIG source of what we sometimes think are either fruit flies or gnats. If this is the case, then that's also the reason that the normal cures don't work. The majority of the plant flies come from overwatering...even if you think you're not putting water in too often, the plant reacts differently, thus breeding the flies.

Check for bits of fruit or food caught in the spaces under the cage pan (the rails that hold the pan somehow get crumbs too)

Also check under and around the cage for any fruit pieces your glider has tossed overboard. The gliders may be hiding stuff from you.

If you have open windows - check all the screens. The fruit flies may be coming in through small holes - attracted by the fruit on the gliders plates at night.

Unfortunately, fruit flies are very easy to breed. (I raised them for months many years ago for a high school genetics project - much to my mother's displeasure) Even in a double enclosed environment (jars with screen lids in aquariums with screens) they still escaped frequently.

I'm not saying it IS your source, but it very well COULD be!! You'd be surprised. I am in property management and have been through this time and time again with tenants and our pest control company. Many tenants will think they have fruit flies and it turns out they don't, it's from plants they have in their homes. I would definitely check into it. :-)

Lot's of good information. Thanks to you all.

Last night I had the cage covered with fleece. They didn't get in and I haven't seen any today. Tonight I'm leaving the cage uncovered but trying a pop bottle with a little banana in it. I'll leave it outside of the cage but right where the dishes are.

I make my own babyfood, for my Grandson, so I make sure to bleach the sink drain and garbage disposal everyday. Now I'm doing it twice a day. Like I said, there ane none in the kitchen at all. Nowhere but the cages.

Okay Tish, tell me what fly paper is.

I'm trying the AJ, vinegar, and dish soap trick tonight.

I use Wal-Mart bags in my under-counter trash can and it gets emptied every time food scraps go in.

The only time these gnats, fruit flies, whatever they are! are near my sink area is when I'm preparing glider food. I have so many right now they are swarming me while I'm choping! shock

They are all over the cages when I wake up in the morning! What makes it so bad is that we have a cage in each bedroom (3) and 2 cages in our living/kitchen/dining area ~ meaning these dang things are all over my house!

I dump glider food every morning (and out with the trash) but they are staying on the sticky little monkey paw prints all over the cage. mad

I guess I may have to wipe down every cage every morning too cry This is the PITS! 2 more months to go!

tant GET OUT BUGS! My sister is having her son's birthday party at my house Sunday!

They sell the fly paper at Wal-mart and it has sticky stuff so when they land on it, they can't get off. I used two kinds....one that you put something sweet in the bottom to attract then and another that doesn't use any attractant. You hang it where they frequent.
Here's an example of the fly paper.

Okay, just wanted to put in my 2 cents. I had fruit flies when I fed HPW. They were terrible! I was so frustrated with them swarming my cages, I wanted to scream!

I have never had the problem of fruit flies with the Priscilla Price diet, never! tant

I have been told that fruit flies will plant their eggs on fresh fruit... other places like in the store... and when the fruit comes to me, the eggs can hatch. I was using fresh fruit and veggies at the time with the HPW.

I chose to stop feeding HPW and went back to the PP diet. Within a week, all the fruit flies were gone. I think it was because of the fresh fruit. With the PP diet, I cut everything up in one day and freeze it for a couple months... so there isn't a chance of flies appearing when I feed it frozen.

I have frozen fruits and veggies, too, feeding HPW....but eventually it thaws, so what would be the difference? Or, do you think maybe it's more the honey that's in the HPW?

I don't have flies, but just thinking of things as we talk about it.

Crystal......try the flypaper! It works! Sorry you're going through this!

Freezing kills the fly eggs. And since I feed the diet frozen, it takes time to thaw, and then start going bad. When fed fresh, the fruit starts to go bad right away.
And the honey could attract them as well.

I didn't mean to offend anyone who feeds HPW, I just got so irritated with the flies that I had to go back to PP.

Oh, I didn't find your post offensive at all! :-) I do let mine thaw for about 15 minutes before putting it in their cage but I never, ever have fruit flies so I can't help but think there are other factors here that we aren't coming up with. I'll ask my pest control company from my office what they have to say and if there are any other options for those that need it.

Okay, the vinegar, AJ, dishsoap mix did not work last night. BUT, I do believe it's because they just stayed with the fruit in the cages. Poor Twinkie frown his fruit was leftover for the second night and COVERED in tiny fruit flies! No wonder he won't eat it! tant

I will keep the mixture out today as all the fruit is out of the cages. Thanks for the fly paper info. I don't have Wal-Mart out here but will check my Dollar General.

Some of my fruit I feed fresh some frozen. If I get a large melon I feed fresh for as long as it lasts and then chop it up and freeze the rest. I've been lucky to find a bunch of different fruits to try right now so alot is fresh. Because of these dang flies though, I cut up 2 casaba melons, 2 santa melons and 2 papayas last night just to get them off the counter ~ no room in the fridge. Shame cuz we were enjoying the fresh melons too, and I really wanted to try my dehydrating some papaya. frown

idea Now, I'm thinking from another perspective: idea Is there a food that these awful flies don't like? Eggs maybe? I could feed a little of something they won't go near til they're gone. Ahhh, they're probably bottom-feeders though and will swarm anything.

Oh, I dont' think mine are attracted to the HPW. I use foraging cups for all my cages so everything is seperated. When I just put in new cage sets and toys a week or so ago there was a tiny bit of HPW left in one of the cages in the morning. The fruits had flies but not the HPW. I'm making it by the recipe with the full amount of honey.

Yeah, I feed HPW and have never had trouble with fruit flies, either. Order flypaper at Wal-Mart online :-)

I'll mention this again, just to rule things out. Do you have any plants in the house?? If so, it COULD be your problem. Once you breed the flies, they'll go for anything so it's possible it has nothing to do with food at all. Overwatering, even just plain WATERING of a plant can produce these flies.
